Interstitial cystitis — also called bladder pain syndrome — is a long-lasting irritation of the bladder lining. Pain in the pelvis or lower tummy, a frequent urge to urinate and night-time trips to the bathroom are typical, and symptoms flare and settle rather than disappear. Interstitial cystitis has no cure; treatment aims at easing symptoms.
Elmiron supplies pentosan polysulfate sodium, a synthetic compound built to resemble the natural molecules that coat the inside of the bladder. Swallowed as a capsule, it is thought to settle onto the bladder surface as a stand-in protective layer, so the irritated wall meets urine less directly. It is one of the options when painkillers, bladder training and diet changes have not been enough.
How to take the capsules
The dose is a single 100mg capsule, three times a day, swallowed whole with a glass of water; opening or chewing it is not how it is meant to be taken. Space the three doses across your waking hours, for instance morning, mid-afternoon and bedtime. Nothing much happens for the first few weeks, and a fair trial runs to several months. Side effects worth knowing
