Most people who land on this page are looking for a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), a medicine that keeps more serotonin available between nerve cells. Sertraline comes as 25mg, 50mg and 100mg tablets for depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD, where unwanted thoughts and repeated rituals take over the day). Escitalopram and Lexapro are both 5mg, 10mg and 20mg tablets, listed for depression and generalised anxiety. Citalopram appears as Citalopram and Celexa, each in 10mg and 20mg.
Fluoxetine is the capsule of the group, sold as Fluoxetine (10mg, 20mg and 60mg) and Fludac (20mg) for depression, OCD and bulimia. Paroxetine is split between Paxil tablets from 10mg to 40mg and Paxil Cr, the controlled-release version at 12.5mg, 25mg and 37.5mg. For OCD there is also Luvox (fluvoxamine), in 50mg and 100mg tablets. Newer to the class are Trintellix (vortioxetine, 5mg to 20mg) and Viibryd (vilazodone, 20mg and 40mg), both for major depression.
A serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) works on two chemical messengers rather than one. Venlafaxine is listed for depression and generalised anxiety as Effexor tablets (37.5mg and 75mg, also sold as plain venlafaxine) and as the capsules Effexor Xr (75mg and 150mg) and Venlor (75mg). Duloxetine capsules, Cymbalta (also sold as plain duloxetine) in 20mg to 60mg, add nerve pain to the list.
Tricyclics are the oldest group here and still have a place. Amitriptyline tablets (10mg to 75mg, plus Elavil) are listed for depression and neuropathic pain, meaning pain from damaged nerves. Clomipramine is for OCD, as a tablet or as Anafranil capsules. Nortriptyline and Pamelor are 25mg capsules, and Doxepin tablets are listed for depression and the poor sleep that goes with it. Expect more dry mouth, constipation and drowsiness from tricyclics than from SSRIs.
These three sit outside the SSRI and SNRI pattern. Mirtazapine and Remeron (7.5mg, 15mg and 30mg) are sedating and often increase appetite. Trazodone and Desyrel (25mg, 50mg and 100mg) also cause drowsiness, which is why they are usually taken in the evening.
Bupropion acts on dopamine and noradrenaline instead of serotonin. The range runs from Bupropion and Bupron SR to Wellbutrin (150mg and 300mg) and Wellbutrin SR. Zyban is the same ingredient listed for quitting smoking. Bupropion lowers the seizure threshold, so it is not a medicine for anyone with a seizure history.
Week one is rarely the good week. Nausea, headaches and restless nights tend to arrive before any lift in mood, and they usually fade; the full effect takes a few weeks.
Missing doses is a bigger trap than it sounds. Stop suddenly and many people get dizzy spells, tingling or a flu-like ache, which is why the dose is tapered down.
One combination matters most. An SSRI taken with tramadol or St John's wort can cause serotonin syndrome: agitation, sweating, tremor and a racing heart.
You can buy sertraline tablets, escitalopram and generic Lexapro tablets, duloxetine (generic Cymbalta) tablets, plus venlafaxine tablets. For uses outside depression or anxiety, such as insomnia with trazodone or neuropathic pain with amitriptyline, the effect is not guaranteed and official references do not recommend that use.
Sertraline comes as 25mg, 50mg and 100mg tablets. Escitalopram comes as 5mg, 10mg and 20mg tablets, also listed as generic Lexapro. Fluoxetine is the one capsule option, at 10mg, 20mg and 60mg.

Mood and anxiety usually start to lift after about two to four weeks, and the full effect can take longer. Side effects such as nausea tend to show up first and ease off, which is why the first fortnight often feels like the hardest stretch.
An SSRI such as sertraline or escitalopram acts on serotonin only. An SNRI such as duloxetine or venlafaxine acts on serotonin and noradrenaline, which is why SNRIs are also listed for nerve pain and can raise blood pressure at higher doses.
Both contain escitalopram and both are listed here as 5mg, 10mg and 20mg tablets. The difference is the brand name on the pack, so you can pick on the name you know and the strength you need.
Alcohol adds to the drowsiness and dizziness of mirtazapine, trazodone and the tricyclics, and it can flatten the mood lift you are taking the tablet for. Many people cut right back while the dose settles.
