Escitalopram is an SSRI antidepressant — a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It is used to treat depression and generalised anxiety disorder, the kind of persistent worry that shows up most days and is hard to switch off. Serotonin is one of the brain's chemical messengers, and escitalopram slows its reabsorption so more of it stays available between nerve cells. That shift is what helps mood and anxiety settle over time. The active ingredient is the same whether the pack says escitalopram or Lexapro. Both products sit in the antidepressants category.
One tablet a day, at a time you can keep to. Morning suits some people, bedtime suits others. It can be swallowed with a meal or on an empty stomach. For adults, 10mg a day is the usual dose, 20mg is the top of the range, and 5mg is a lower strength that some people start on. Nothing happens straight away: sleep, appetite and energy often shift within a week or two, while low mood and worry usually ease over four to six weeks. Missing a tablet now and then is unlikely to matter much, but do not double up to catch up.
Expect a few early adjustments. Feeling sick, headache, a dry mouth, sweating more than usual, looser stools, trouble sleeping or daytime drowsiness are all common in the first fortnight and usually fade. A minority of people feel more restless and anxious for the first few days rather than calmer.
Sodium can drop in the blood, most often in older people, bringing headache, confusion and unsteadiness. Easy bruising or bleeding is possible too. The rare one to recognise is serotonin syndrome, where shivering, heavy sweating, twitching muscles, agitation, a racing heartbeat, confusion and diarrhoea arrive together; it needs urgent treatment.
Two tablets, one ingredient. Escitalopram tablets carry the plain ingredient name; generic Lexapro is the same medicine under the brand name it was first sold as. Both are tablets in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg, so the difference between them is the name on the box rather than what is inside.
Do not take escitalopram with an MAOI, an older type of antidepressant — the two together can push serotonin to a dangerous level. Migraine triptans, tramadol and St John's wort carry a smaller version of the same risk. Ibuprofen, aspirin and blood thinners add to the chance of bleeding. Alcohol makes the drowsiness and dizziness worse. Keep the strips in their packaging, somewhere cool and dry away from direct sun, and check the date on the pack before you use them.

Lexapro is a brand name of escitalopram, which is also sold as Cipralex, Lexamil, Nexito, Seroplex and Estar. Here, escitalopram can be bought online as generic Lexapro and escitalopram tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
There is no fixed end date. Once mood improves, a course normally runs on for at least six months so that symptoms have time to settle, and people who have had repeated episodes often stay on it longer. Stopping the day you feel better makes a relapse more likely.
A drink or two is not forbidden, but escitalopram and alcohol both slow you down, so the pair can leave you drowsier and dizzier than either alone. The effect is strongest in the first few weeks. Many people find their tolerance drops and they simply want less.
Any time of day works, and people often choose the morning to avoid the sleepiness some feel a few hours after a tablet. If you want to move your dose, shift it by an hour a day until you reach the new slot, rather than jumping from morning to night in one step.
The two can be used together, but both make bleeding more likely, so bruises, nosebleeds and stomach irritation turn up more often on the pair. Occasional doses are one thing; if you need a painkiller most days, paracetamol is the easier option alongside escitalopram.
Stopping abruptly can bring dizziness, nausea, tingling in the hands, headache, vivid dreams and a wave of anxiety within a few days. These are withdrawal effects, not a return of the original problem, and they ease quickly when the dose is reduced in steps over a few weeks instead.
