What this category covers
Most of the medicines here are eye drops, and most of those treat one problem: pressure inside the eye. The rest fight bacterial infections, calm inflammation, help long-term dry eye or widen the pupil for an eye examination. Knowing which group a bottle belongs to is the quickest way to find the right listing.
Drops for glaucoma and raised eye pressure
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, and raised pressure inside the eye (ocular hypertension) is its main treatable risk factor. Several kinds of drops bring the pressure down in different ways:
- Prostaglandin analogues, used once each evening, help fluid drain out: Xalatan (latanoprost 0.005%), Travatan and Travoprost (travoprost 0.004%), and bimatoprost as Careprost, Lumigan and their bimatoprost relatives.
- Timolol, a beta-blocker drop, reduces the amount of fluid the eye makes: Timoptic 0.5%.
- Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors do the same by another route: Trusopt (dorzolamide 2%) and Azopt (brinzolamide 1%).
- Two-in-one bottles combine two of these actions: Cosopt pairs dorzolamide 2% with timolol 0.5%, and Combigan pairs brimonidine 0.2% with timolol 0.5%. Brimonidine, the partner in Combigan, both slows fluid production and helps it drain.
Many people with glaucoma end up using two or three of these. Spacing different drops at least 5 minutes apart stops one washing out the next, and a combination bottle means fewer drops to remember each day.
When drops alone are not enough, Diamox (also sold as plain acetazolamide) 250mg tablets lower pressure from inside the body. Acetazolamide is also used to prevent altitude sickness, which is why it appears in a second category.
Infection and inflammation
Antibiotic drops treat bacterial conjunctivitis, the sticky, yellow-discharge kind of red eye: Ciloxan (ciprofloxacin 0.3%) and Ocuflox (ofloxacin 0.3%). Viral and allergic red eyes do not respond to them.
Where infection comes with swelling, a steroid can be added. Tobradex combines the antibiotic tobramycin 0.3% with dexamethasone 0.1% as drops, and the same pairing comes as an ointment tube in Tobramycin And Dexamethasone. Ciprodex, also sold as Ciprofloxacin + Dexamethasone, pairs the antibiotic ciprofloxacin 0.3% with dexamethasone 0.1%, as drops for eye or ear infections that come with inflammation.
Dry eye and eye examinations
Cyclomune contains cyclosporine, which damps down the inflammation behind chronic dry eye so the eye makes more of its own tears. Cyclogyl (cyclopentolate 1%) and Mydriacyl (tropicamide 1%) widen the pupil and relax focusing for a few hours, as used in eye tests; cyclopentolate also eases pain in some types of eye inflammation.

Which eye care medicines and forms can I buy online in Hong Kong?
PockDose lists single-ingredient pressure-lowering eye drops: latanoprost 0.005%, travoprost 0.004%, bimatoprost 0.03%, timolol 0.5%, dorzolamide 2% and brinzolamide 1%. Combination drop bottles include dorzolamide 2% with timolol 0.5%, and brimonidine 0.2% with timolol 0.5%. Ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin are available as antibiotic eye drops. How are eye care medicines packaged and delivered to Hong Kong?
Orders arrive in plain, unbranded packaging. Tracked courier takes 5–9 business days; standard airmail takes 14–21 business days and is untracked. See delivery and ordering details.
Which eye drops lower eye pressure?
Latanoprost, travoprost and bimatoprost help fluid drain from the eye; timolol, dorzolamide and brinzolamide reduce how much fluid it makes. Cosopt and Combigan put two of these in one bottle, so fewer separate drops are needed each day.
What is the difference between Xalatan, Travatan and Lumigan?
All three are prostaglandin analogue drops used once each evening for glaucoma and raised eye pressure. They contain different ingredients: latanoprost in Xalatan, travoprost in Travatan and bimatoprost in Lumigan. Redness of the eye is more common with bimatoprost and travoprost than with latanoprost.
Do antibiotic eye drops work for every red eye?
No. Ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin drops only treat bacterial conjunctivitis, usually recognised by a thick yellow or green discharge. Most red eyes are viral or allergic and clear without antibiotics, so these drops would not help them.
Why are acetazolamide tablets in the eye care category?
Acetazolamide lowers eye pressure by reducing the fluid the eye produces, the same way dorzolamide drops do, but it works through the bloodstream. It is used for glaucoma when drops are not enough, and also to prevent altitude sickness.
