Wake up wheezing and you need something that works in minutes. Wheeze every few weeks and you need something working quietly in the background. Those are different medicines, so the sections below run from fast relief to daily control, then COPD and lung scarring, then cough and mucus.
Salbutamol is the rescue medicine, working on tightened airways within minutes. It is listed as Ventolin Inhaler, Proair Inhaler and plain Salbutamol, all 100mcg, with Ventolin Pills as 2mg and 4mg tablets for people who prefer to swallow. A shaky hand and a racing heartbeat for a few minutes are the typical effects of a puff. For COPD, two combined relievers add ipratropium, a second airway-opening drug: Combivent with salbutamol and Combimist L Inhaler with levosalbutamol, both 50/20mcg.
Feeling fine is no reason to skip a steroid inhaler; it keeps the airway swelling down so attacks do not start. Pulmicort and Budesonide Inhaler (also sold as Budecort) come in 100mcg and 200mcg, and Beclate Inhaler is beclomethasone at 200mcg. Budesonide also appears as Rhinocort, a 100mcg nasal spray for allergic rhinitis.
One device can carry both a steroid and a long-acting airway opener, which saves juggling two inhalers.
