Careprost: bimatoprost drops for eye pressure
Careprost is a branded generic eye drop made with bimatoprost. It lowers the pressure inside the eye in open-angle glaucoma, where the nerve at the back of the eye is slowly damaged, and in ocular hypertension (raised eye pressure without that damage). Each bottle holds 3ml of solution; that figure is the volume, not the strength of the drops. You can order one bottle, or a pack of 3 or 6 for longer use.
Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analogue. It opens up the natural outflow routes of the fluid that fills the front of the eye, so less fluid builds up and the pressure falls. Keeping pressure down protects the optic nerve from further harm; it cannot repair damage that has already happened, which is why the drops are used every day, including the days when your eyes feel fine.
Putting the drops in
One drop in each affected eye, once a day in the evening, is the usual routine. A second daily drop does not add anything; using bimatoprost more often can actually weaken its effect. Tilt your head back, pull the lower lid down and let the drop fall into the pocket without the tip touching the eye, lashes or fingers. Recap straight away, without rinsing the tip.
If you wear contact lenses, take them out first and put them back 15 minutes later. When you use another eye medicine as well, space the two by at least 5 minutes so the second does not wash the first away.
What you may notice
Red or bloodshot eyes are the most common effect, along with itching, dryness, a gritty feeling and short-lived blurring after the drop goes in. Over months, bimatoprost can make the eyelashes longer and darker, darken the skin of the eyelid and slowly turn a light iris browner. The iris change can be permanent, which matters most when only one eye is treated. Eye pain or a sudden change in sight needs urgent treatment.
