Tablets for worm infections

The species decides the tablet. Albendazole and Albenza are 400mg tablets used for tapeworm, pinworm and hookworm infections, and taking them with a meal, ideally a fatty one, helps the body absorb the drug. Mebendazole and Vermox are 100mg tablets for pinworm, roundworm and hookworm; for pinworm a single dose is normally repeated after two weeks to catch newly hatched worms.

Ivermectin is sold as Ivermectin and Stromectol in 3mg, 6mg and 12mg tablets. It is used for strongyloidiasis (a threadworm that lives in the gut), river blindness and scabies, and the dose is worked out from body weight. Praziquantel and Biltricide are 600mg tablets for schistosomiasis (a flatworm caught from fresh water) and liver flukes, swallowed whole with a meal. Dicaris, a 50mg levamisole tablet, is the listing for roundworm.

Scabies and lice: the creams

Itching that gets worse at night, with a rash between the fingers, is the classic scabies picture. Permethrin is the main answer: Permethrin, Elimite and Acticin all come in 30g tubes or creams, and Permethrin and Elimite are also listed for head lice. The cream goes on from the neck down, stays on for 8 to 14 hours and is then washed off. Everyone in the household is treated at the same time, and bedding and clothes are washed hot.

Eurax is a 5% crotamiton cream that eases itching and is listed for scabies too. If creams are awkward to use over a whole body, ivermectin tablets are the alternative route.

Malaria, lupus and protozoal infections

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine started as malaria medicines, and each now has a second job. Chloroquine comes as 250mg and 500mg tablets, as Chloroquine and Aralen, listed for malaria and lupus. Resistance to chloroquine is widespread in many malaria regions, so it only suits areas where the parasite still responds. Hydroxychloroquine and Plaquenil (200mg and 400mg) are listed for lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and malaria, and long courses need regular eye checks because the drug can affect the retina.

Giardia, amoebic dysentery and trichomonas are protozoal infections, caused by single-celled parasites, and Ornidazole 500mg is the tablet listed for them. It also covers some anaerobic bacterial infections. Expect a metallic taste.

Most tablets in this group bring nausea, cramps, headache or dizziness at some point. Stopping when the symptoms ease is a mistake: finish the course on the pack.

What is the difference between albendazole and mebendazole?
