FAQ
Which Biltricide strength and pack sizes can I order?
Biltricide contains praziquantel. The pack contains generic praziquantel, not the original Biltricide. The 600mg tablets come in packs of 4, 12, 20, 40 or 80. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How do I pay for Biltricide and what if it goes missing?
The pack contains generic praziquantel, not the original Biltricide. Pay by Visa, Mastercard or American Express on a secure, encrypted page, or Bitcoin or Ethereum. If a parcel does not arrive, it is sent again free, or refunded if not possible.
Can I drink alcohol with Biltricide?
A drink will not stop praziquantel working, but alcohol adds to the dizziness and drowsiness the tablets can cause, and the combination can leave you feeling rough. Leaving alcohol out on the day of treatment, and until the drowsiness has passed, is the sensible choice.
Should I take Biltricide with food?
Yes. Food helps the body absorb praziquantel, and a meal containing some fat does this best. Each of the three doses should go with something to eat; if a full meal is hard to face, a decent snack is better than an empty stomach.
Can I drive after taking Biltricide?
Drowsiness is common with praziquantel and can carry over into the following day, so driving, cycling and machinery are best avoided on the day of treatment and the day after. Wait until you feel fully alert again before getting behind the wheel.
Can I breastfeed after taking Biltricide?
Praziquantel passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding is paused on the day of treatment and for the following three days (72 hours). After that it can be resumed as normal.
About Biltricide
What Biltricide tablets are used for
Biltricide is praziquantel 600mg tablets. Praziquantel belongs to a class of medicines called anthelmintics, which kill parasitic worms. It treats schistosomiasis, an infection picked up from freshwater where blood flukes live, and liver fluke infections, where worms settle in or around the liver. Both are most common in tropical and subtropical regions, where washing, fishing or farming can mean contact with infected water, and praziquantel is the medicine used in the large-scale treatment programmes run in those countries. The pack carries the Biltricide name, while the tablets inside the pack are generic praziquantel 600mg, sold in several pack sizes. Infection can be picked up again after treatment, because the parasite lives in the water rather than in people, so repeat courses are common where it circulates.
How it works, and how a course is taken
Praziquantel upsets the calcium balance inside the worms' muscles. Paralysed, they lose their grip on blood vessel walls and tissue, and the body clears them away. Treatment is short: three doses across a single day, spaced four to six hours apart, each swallowed with water and a meal. The tablets are notched so that one can be split when a part-tablet dose is needed, and every piece should go down straight away. Chewing a tablet, or holding it in the mouth, brings out a bitter taste that can cause gagging or vomiting.
Side effects to expect
Headache, dizziness, stomach pain, nausea, itching and a general unwell feeling are the usual complaints, sometimes with a mild fever. Many of these come from the worms dying rather than from the tablets themselves, and they tend to settle within a day or two. Hives with swelling of the lips or throat, or trouble breathing, need urgent treatment.
What to avoid around treatment
Rifampicin, a first-choice antibiotic for tuberculosis, is not taken with praziquantel — it clears the medicine from the body so quickly that the worms survive. Cimetidine, used for heartburn and stomach ulcers, slows that clearance instead. Grapefruit juice is best left out around treatment day. Praziquantel is also unsuitable when tapeworm cysts are present in the eye, because killing the cysts there can damage the eye itself. Keep the pack somewhere cool and dry.
