Aceclofenac belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the family that includes ibuprofen and naproxen. It eases pain and calms the swelling and stiffness that come with joint problems, and it is used for osteoarthritis (the wear-and-tear kind), rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory condition that stiffens the spine. Strains, sprains and backache are also common reasons to take it for a short stretch.
It works by blocking the COX enzymes your body uses to make prostaglandins, the chemicals that make an inflamed joint hurt and swell. Fewer of them means less pain signalling and less puffiness. Aceclofenac does not repair a joint or change the course of arthritis — it lowers pain and stiffness for as long as you need it.
The adult daily total is 200mg. With 100mg tablets that usually means one in the morning and one in the evening; a 200mg tablet holds the same amount in a single dose. Take yours with a meal or a glass of water if it upsets your stomach — food changes how fast aceclofenac is absorbed, not how much. Use the smallest dose that keeps symptoms in check and stop when you no longer need it, which for a sprain may be days and for arthritis is often longer.
Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhoea are what people notice most, sometimes with dizziness. A tablet taken with food is easier on the stomach. A few effects should not be waited out: black tarry stools or vomited blood point to bleeding in the stomach, and a rash with swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing, is a severe allergic reaction that needs urgent treatment. Long-term use can also raise blood pressure and put extra strain on the kidneys.
Two NSAIDs at once is a bad idea — ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac or pain-relief doses of aspirin on top of aceclofenac add stomach risk without adding much relief. Aceclofenac also interacts with warfarin and similar blood thinners, with lithium and with diuretics (water tablets). Alcohol increases the chance of stomach irritation, and the tablets are not suitable if you have an active stomach ulcer or have bled from the gut on an NSAID before.
