Azelastine is a 10ml nasal spray antihistamine for allergic rhinitis and seasonal allergies — sneezing, itching, a runny or blocked nose — sold singly or in packs of 2, 3 or 6.
Azelastine is an antihistamine delivered straight into the nose, which is why it is quick: it works where the allergy is, not through the bloodstream first. It blocks histamine at its H1 receptors (the landing points on nasal cells that trigger sneezing, itching and a running nose) and also steadies the mast cells that release histamine in the first place. Its job is to stop sneezing, itch and a runny nose; for a stuffed nose it helps less than a steroid spray.
Seasonal hay fever and year-round nasal allergy are the main reasons people buy it. In some countries it is also used for vasomotor rhinitis, a runny or blocked nose with no allergy behind it. Azelastine also exists as eye drops for allergic itchy eyes, but those are a separate product and not part of this range.
Azelastine is the single-ingredient listing, a 10ml bottle of nasal spray. Spray into each nostril once or twice a day, depending on how the product is labelled. The first time, press the pump a few times until a fine mist appears. Tilt your head slightly forward, breathe in gently and do not tip your head back. Each bottle is meant for one person only. Since it is a pump spray for the nose, keep it away from your eyes and do not swallow it.
Dymista pairs azelastine with fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid, in one 50/140mcg bottle. That suits moderate to severe symptoms where an antihistamine spray alone has not been enough, because the steroid adds control over congestion and inflammation. The steroid part takes days of regular use to reach full effect, while azelastine acts almost at once. As Dymista already holds azelastine, the two sprays are not used together.
A bitter taste is the common one, along with a nosebleed, headache, sneezing or stinging in the nose. Sleepiness is possible, and alcohol or sedatives make it worse. An allergic reaction, with swelling of the face or lips or trouble breathing, is rare and serious.
