Choline salicylate is a salicylate, the group aspirin comes from. In a gel it goes straight onto a mouth ulcer, a gum nipped by a brace bracket or a patch a denture has rubbed raw, and it calms inflammation in the tissue it touches instead of travelling through the bloodstream. The swollen, tender feeling around the sore eases while the lining of the mouth heals.
What it is used for
Typical cases are an ulcer that appears and clears, a cold sore, a tender gum, and the raw patch left by a denture or an orthodontic appliance. Treat only the spot that hurts, for a few days. There is no reason to coat the whole mouth.
How to apply it
Use a clean finger. Put a small amount of gel on the fingertip and rub it gently over the sore patch. Choline salicylate gels are not meant to be used more often than once every three hours, so two or three applications across a day is plenty. Try to keep the gel on the spot rather than swallowing it straight away, and close the bottle between uses. Where a denture presses, the gel can go on before the plate goes back in.
Side effects and who should skip it
A short sting or tingle as the gel goes on is the usual complaint, along with numbness and a bitter or altered taste that soon passes. Serious reactions are rare and allergic: swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, a rash or hives, or trouble breathing need urgent treatment. Anyone who has reacted badly to aspirin or another salicylate should avoid this family of gels.
