One steroid, three kinds of product
Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid that copies cortisol and shuts down much of the body's inflammatory signalling. It is also long-acting, with an effect that carries on for more than a day after a tablet. The shop has it in five listings: two plain tablets, and three antibiotic-plus-steroid products that go on the eye or into the ear.
Tablets: Decadron and Dexone
Decadron and Dexone are both 0.5mg tablets of dexamethasone, differing only in name and in the uses listed for each: arthritis and inflammation for Decadron, inflammation and severe allergic conditions for Dexone. The tablets are used for arthritis flares, severe allergies, inflammatory skin disease, asthma-type breathing inflammation and some autoimmune conditions, and in hospital for severe COVID-19.
The daily amount depends entirely on what is being treated, from a few days to months. Weeks of steroid use bring weight gain, thin skin, bone loss, higher blood pressure and blood sugar, infections that take hold more easily and a suppressed adrenal response, so long courses are tapered down. Short courses mostly cause poor sleep, mood swings, appetite and indigestion. Ibuprofen and aspirin-type tablets raise the ulcer risk when taken with it.
Drops and ointment with an antibiotic

These are short-course products. The steroid in them does nothing for viral or fungal infections and can make them worse, and using steroid drops for a long time can raise the pressure inside the eye.

What is the difference between dexamethasone and prednisolone?

What happens with long-term dexamethasone use?

Can I take dexamethasone with ibuprofen?

Is dexamethasone the same as the dexamethasone in eye drops?
The molecule is the same, but the tablet acts through the bloodstream on the whole body and the drops act mainly where they are placed. Drops carry fewer body-wide effects, while eye pressure and infection spread are the main drop concerns.
