What etoricoxib is used for

Etoricoxib is an anti-inflammatory tablet from the coxib family, taken once a day. Its long-term jobs are the joint conditions osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Its short-term jobs are an acute gout attack and pain after dental surgery, both measured in days, not weeks. The practical draw is the schedule: one tablet daily, where ibuprofen is usually taken three times and naproxen twice.

How it differs from ibuprofen and diclofenac

Take ibuprofen for a stiff knee all week and heartburn often follows. The reason is that ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac block two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2. Only COX-2 drives inflammation. COX-1 helps guard the stomach lining and keeps platelets working. Etoricoxib mostly targets COX-2, so the gut usually gets off more lightly, though ulcers and bleeds still happen.

The price of that selectivity shows up on the circulation side. Etoricoxib can push blood pressure up, more so at the higher strengths, and like other anti-inflammatories it carries a raised chance of heart attack and stroke that rises with dose and length of use. That is why the label sets ceiling amounts for each condition and asks for the lowest effective strength.

Who it does not suit, and what it clashes with

Heart failure, established heart disease, a previous stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, an active ulcer or gut bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, severe liver trouble and kidney function below a set threshold all rule it out, as do pregnancy, breastfeeding and age under 16. Milder liver impairment lowers the most that can be taken. Anyone who has had wheezing, hives or a runny nose after aspirin or another anti-inflammatory should leave it alone.

Among medicines, warfarin and other blood thinners call for closer clotting checks, lithium levels can climb, and methotrexate levels can rise at the 120mg strength. Water tablets and blood pressure medicines such as ACE inhibitors become less effective and put more strain on the kidneys. Etoricoxib can also raise the level of the oestrogen in some contraceptive pills.

The Arcoxia listing

Arcoxia is the shop's etoricoxib: film-coated tablets in 60mg, 90mg and 120mg. Each strength is the label's ceiling for a different use, so the condition picks the tablet, not how bad the pain feels. Which strength goes with which use, plus the packs and how to take it, is on the Arcoxia page.

What is another name for etoricoxib?

Arcoxia is a brand name of etoricoxib, which is also sold as Etoshine and Nucoxia. Here, etoricoxib can be bought online as generic Arcoxia. These are generics, not the original brand.

Is etoricoxib a painkiller or an anti-inflammatory?

It is an anti-inflammatory (an NSAID of the COX-2 type) that eases pain by reducing the swelling and inflammation behind it. It is not a simple painkiller like paracetamol, and it works best where inflammation is the source, as in arthritis and gout.

Is etoricoxib easier on the stomach than ibuprofen?

Its COX-2 focus means less irritation of the stomach lining than non-selective anti-inflammatories. It is still not risk-free for the gut, and it brings its own cautions for blood pressure and the heart, so it is a trade rather than a free upgrade.

Does etoricoxib raise blood pressure?

It can. Fluid retention and higher readings are among its better-known effects, and they appear more often at the higher strengths. People with blood pressure that is already high and untreated are excluded, and those on blood pressure tablets can find those work less well.

Why is etoricoxib taken only once a day?

It stays active in the body for roughly a day after each tablet, so one tablet covers the full 24 hours. Taking more than the label amount does not add relief and adds to the heart, blood pressure and stomach risks.
