Fenofibrate
160/200mg
Fenofibrate 160mg and 200mg tablets, taken once daily to bring down high triglycerides and treat mixed dyslipidaemia when diet changes alone have not been enough, in packs of 30 to 360.
Fenofibrate is a fibrate, a medicine that lowers the fats circulating in your blood. It is used for very high triglycerides and for mixed hyperlipidaemia, where triglycerides and cholesterol are both out of balance. Diet and exercise do part of the work; the tablets do the rest. The Fenofibrate tablets sold here are plain tablets in 160mg and 200mg, taken once a day.
Triglycerides are the fat your body stores for energy. At very high levels they can inflame the pancreas (pancreatitis) and are linked with heart and blood vessel problems. Fenofibrate switches on a receptor in liver cells called PPAR-alpha, which speeds up the breakdown of triglyceride-rich particles and raises HDL cholesterol, the carrier that clears fat away from the arteries. LDL cholesterol, the harmful type, usually comes down a little as well.
One tablet a day is the whole routine. Swallow it whole with water and keep to roughly the same time each day, which keeps the amount in your body steady. What you eat still counts: alcohol, sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates push triglycerides up, so cutting back on them works in the same direction as the medicine, along with regular exercise and losing weight if you carry extra.
Most people who have trouble get a sore belly, a headache, a bad back, nausea or loose stools, and it usually passes. Muscle damage is the one to take seriously. Unexplained pain, tenderness or weakness in a muscle is how it shows. Months or years on a fibrate can also bring gallstones or a rise in liver enzymes, so yellow skin or eyes, or pain under the right ribs, should not be put down to something else.
Warfarin and other blood thinners become more powerful when fenofibrate is added, so the thinner dose often has to come down. Statins are a common partner for fenofibrate, and the pair raises the chance of muscle trouble more than either one alone. Two fibrates are not taken together, since they do the same job by the same route.
Both strengths are once-daily and swallowed whole with water; the choice comes down to the dose that suits you. Fenofibrate sits alongside the other cholesterol medicines, and that page sets out the wider range used for blood fats.
Fenofibrate can be ordered online for delivery to Hong Kong. The page lists plain Fenofibrate tablets in 160mg and 200mg. An order can be cancelled within 24 hours if it has not been dispatched, and support answers around the clock in English and Cantonese.
Fenofibrate is priced per pack: its page lists every strength and pack size with the current price in HKD or your chosen currency.
PockDose does not ask you to upload a prescription when you order fenofibrate. See the ordering FAQ for details.
Lipanthyl and Tricor are brand names of fenofibrate, which is also sold as Fenolip, Lipantil, Triglide and Antara. Here, fenofibrate can be bought online as fenofibrate tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
Both bring blood fats down, but they aim at different targets. Fenofibrate is the stronger of the two for triglycerides and also raises HDL cholesterol; statins are the main choice for lowering LDL cholesterol. A statin is often the first medicine used after diet, with fenofibrate added when triglycerides stay high.
Yes. The two are commonly combined when a statin alone has not brought triglycerides and HDL cholesterol into range, and fenofibrate is also used on its own when a statin is unsuitable. The trade-off is muscle trouble, which is more likely on the pair than on either medicine by itself.
It can, though it is uncommon. What to watch for is aching, tenderness or weakness in muscles you have not been exercising, most often in the thighs, shoulders or lower back. It is more frequent in people who also take a statin, and in those with kidney problems. Muscle damage from fibrates can be serious when it happens.
Tricor is one of the brand names for fenofibrate, and the active ingredient is the same. What differs is the tablet you get; the strengths sold here are plain fenofibrate 160mg and 200mg tablets, taken once a day.
It is a long-term medicine, not a short course. Triglyceride levels climb back once it is stopped, so the tablets are usually continued while diet, exercise and weight changes alone are not holding the levels down. Some people take fenofibrate for years.
