Most blood pressure tablets act on the vessels or the heart. Indapamide goes through the kidneys instead: it is a thiazide-like diuretic that makes them release more salt, and water leaves with it. Uric acid can rise too, which matters if you have gout.

It can. Indapamide makes the kidneys lose more sodium and water, and potassium can fall along with them; sodium levels may dip a little too. Blood tests are used to follow these levels, and potassium-rich foods such as bananas, oranges, prunes and dried fruit are often part of the plan.
A drink now and then is unlikely to cause trouble, but alcohol increases the drowsiness these tablets can cause and can leave you lightheaded when you stand up quickly. On days when you drink more than usual, take extra care with driving or anything that needs a steady head.
It is a long-term medicine. Indapamide keeps blood pressure down rather than curing it, so pressure tends to creep back up once the tablets stop; most people stay on it for years. The daily routine — one tablet each morning — is what keeps the effect even.
Take the missed tablet later the same day as soon as you remember. Once the next dose is nearly due, leave the missed one out and carry on with the usual morning tablet; doubling up does not make up the difference.
