Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic for bacterial infections: chest infections that will not shift, sinusitis, urine infections, flare-ups of chronic bronchitis and infected wounds. It does nothing for a cold, flu or viral sore throat, because those are viruses. Inside the bacterium it blocks two enzymes that copy and repair DNA, so the germ cannot multiply and the body's defences finish the job.

Pneumonia or an infected wound needs more days of the same routine, and a few infections are treated with a tablet every 24 to 48 hours instead. Take the last tablet anyway. The bacteria still alive after an early stop are the tougher ones, and they are the ones that return.
Headache, dizziness, nausea, loose stools, constipation and broken sleep are the ones reported most, and a few people find everything tastes odd or metallic. A minority find the sun harsher than usual, so sunscreen and a hat are sensible. Tendons, the cords that anchor muscle to bone, can turn sore or swollen and, rarely, tear; the risk is higher past 60 and in anyone also taking steroid tablets such as prednisone. Numbness, tingling or a burning sensation in the hands or feet can signal nerve irritation. Confusion, hallucinations, a seizure or a low mood that lingers is uncommon but worth knowing about. For people with myasthenia gravis (a muscle-weakening condition), worsening weakness or trouble breathing is a particular concern. A spreading rash, or swelling of the face, lips or throat, points to an allergic reaction.
Take an indigestion remedy and a levofloxacin tablet together and much of the antibiotic never reaches the blood. Antacids, and supplements of calcium, magnesium, iron or zinc, grip levofloxacin in the gut, so leave at least two hours around the tablet. Warfarin can make bleeding more likely while you are on the antibiotic, theophylline may build to higher levels in the body, steroids add to the tendon risk, and blood sugar can swing up or down, which matters for anyone on diabetes treatment.
