What mebeverine is for
The cramping and pain of irritable bowel syndrome come from the muscles in the gut wall tightening harder and more often than they should. Mebeverine is a muscle relaxant that works on that muscle directly, easing the spasm rather than masking the pain. It's used for IBS and for spastic colon — the term for painful, irregular contractions of the colon. Older antispasmodics act through the nerves that supply the gut; mebeverine acts on the muscle itself, so ordinary bowel movement carries on much as before.

Fitting the tablets round meals
Mebeverine works best when it's already in the gut as your food arrives, so the usual adult dose is one 135mg tablet three times a day, roughly 20 minutes before a meal — before breakfast, before lunch and before dinner if you eat three times a day. Swallow the tablet whole with water. If you forget one, take it as soon as you think of it, provided your next dose isn't close by; if it is, let the missed tablet go and pick up as normal. Doubling up isn't needed. Between doses, keep the strips in their box somewhere cool and dry — heat and damp spoil tablets faster than time does.
What it can cause
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild. A skin rash, or itchy, red skin, is the one most often reported; nausea, headache and indigestion turn up too. The reaction to know about is a severe allergic one — swelling of the throat or tongue, a raised itchy rash, trouble breathing — which needs emergency treatment. For most people mebeverine leaves driving and using tools unaffected.
When mebeverine is not for you
Mebeverine isn't for anyone whose gut muscles have stopped moving food along (paralytic ileus), or who has had a bad reaction to mebeverine before. It's used in adults and children aged 10 and over.
