What miconazole clears up
Athlete's foot between the toes and across the sole, jock itch in the groin folds, and ringworm — a scaly ring with a clearer middle — all come from the same family of fungus living in the top layer of skin. Miconazole is one of the imidazole antifungals, and it stops that fungus growing: it blocks the fat, ergosterol, that holds the fungus's outer membrane together, so the infection cannot spread and the skin settles. Tinea versicolor, the pale or brown patches that turn up on the chest and back, and yeast rashes in warm creases such as under the breasts, clear with it too.
Three tubes, one medicine
Micatin and Micogel 2% come as 15g tubes of cream, and Miconazole is a 2% tube under the plain name. They are the same medicine used in the same way, so the choice comes down to the name on the pack; a 15g tube covers a course on a small patch, while a rash across both feet will empty one faster. You will find them with the rest of the antifungals, and the two branded tubes also sit under skin care.
Getting a course right
Dry skin first, because fungus does well on damp skin: after a shower, pat the rash dry, then smooth on a thin film that covers it and about a finger-width of healthy skin around it. Morning and night is the pattern. Between the toes, push the cream well into the gaps and put on fresh socks every day. The itch goes before the fungus does, and many rashes return because the tube was put away at the first relief, so carry on for a few days after the skin looks normal. Of the three kinds of rash, athlete's foot usually takes longest. The eyes and mouth need to stay clear of it.
Reactions and storage
Burning, stinging, itching or redness where the cream goes on are the complaints that come up most, and they often settle as treatment continues; dry or peeling skin is reported too. A rash that spreads over the body, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, needs urgent treatment. Screw the cap back on, keep the tube somewhere cool and dry, and check the date printed on it before you start.

How long does miconazole take to work?

Can I use miconazole for nail fungus?
No — the cream cannot get through the hard nail plate to the fungus underneath, so an infected nail will not clear. Miconazole skin creams are for the skin around and between the toes, and nail infections need a treatment that reaches into the nail itself.
Can I use miconazole cream on my face?
Yes, it is used on fungal patches on the face, applied thinly and kept well away from the eyes and mouth. It is not the same thing as a miconazole oral gel, which is a separate product for thrush inside the mouth.
Can I drink alcohol with miconazole cream?
Yes. A cream works where it is rubbed in and very little of it reaches the bloodstream, so alcohol has nothing to interfere with. Drinking does not make miconazole less effective or slow the skin down.
