Ornidazole 500mg tablets are an antimicrobial used for amoebic gut and liver infections, giardiasis, trichomoniasis and anaerobic bacterial infections, supplied in packs of 30 to 120.
Ornidazole belongs to the nitroimidazole family, the same group as metronidazole, and it acts on two kinds of organism: single-celled parasites (protozoa) and bacteria that cannot live in oxygen (anaerobes). It is used for amoebic dysentery and other amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection caused by a protozoan), bacterial vaginosis, and anaerobic infections such as dental abscesses, pelvic infections and infected surgical wounds. Susceptible organisms take ornidazole in and convert it into reactive compounds that damage their DNA. Without working DNA they cannot multiply, so the infection stops spreading while the body clears what is left. Human cells do not carry out that conversion, which keeps the effect on the parasite or bacterium rather than the tissue around it. Ornidazole is absorbed well and reaches most parts of the body, so the same tablet treats an infection in the gut, the pelvis or a wound.
Swallow the tablets whole with water. Dosing is usually once or twice a day and the course runs from a few days to about two weeks, depending on what is being treated. Food helps if they upset your stomach. Finish the course even when you feel normal again after two or three days, because stopping early lets the infection return. Leave alcohol alone for the whole course: the two together cause flushing, nausea, vomiting and a fast heartbeat. Ornidazole is generally avoided in the first three months of pregnancy.
Nausea, a metallic taste, headache, dizziness and stomach pain are the usual complaints, and they tend to fade as the course goes on. Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet can develop with longer treatment and should be checked rather than ignored. A rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing needs urgent help. Ornidazole strengthens the effect of warfarin and similar blood thinners, so unusual bruising or bleeding gums while taking both is a sign to act on.
