Phenazopyridine 200mg tablets relieve the burning, urgency and frequent urination of a urinary tract infection, sold here in packs from 30 to 360 tablets.
Phenazopyridine eases the burning, stinging, urgency and the frequent trips to the toilet that come with a urinary tract infection, and the soreness left behind by a catheter, a cystoscopy or another procedure in the bladder. It travels through the kidneys and leaves the body in the urine, working where it lands: the drug coats the irritated lining of the lower urinary tract and calms it. What it cannot do is kill bacteria. An infection still needs treating in its own right, and the tablet only covers the pain while that happens.
The usual adult dose is one 200mg tablet three times a day, after meals, and you can stop once the pain and burning have completely gone. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water — chewing or crushing it can stain your teeth. For infection symptoms it is taken for no longer than two days, which makes it a short-term measure rather than a daily medicine. The kidneys clear it, so it is not used by people with kidney disease. Keep the pack somewhere out of the heat and out of children's reach.
Red-orange or brown urine is the expected effect, not a sign of bleeding, and it disappears when the tablets stop. The dye can also mark clothing and contact lenses, so it is easier to leave lenses out for those few days. Headache, dizziness and an unsettled stomach are the usual complaints, and taking the tablet after food helps. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, confusion, a bluish tinge to the skin, breathlessness, a rash, a swollen face, hands, feet or legs, or a sudden drop in how much urine you pass point to a serious reaction rather than an ordinary side effect.
