Side effects people report
Sleep is the usual complaint: trouble falling asleep, waking in the night, restlessness or nervousness. A rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing after a dose needs urgent treatment.
Interactions and who should avoid it
Piracetam is cleared by the kidneys, so it is not used when kidney function is badly reduced. It is also avoided after a cerebral haemorrhage (a bleed in the brain) and in Huntington's chorea, an inherited condition that causes involuntary movements. Taken with warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel or similar blood thinners it can increase the tendency to bleed, and thyroid hormone replacement used at the same time has been linked with confusion, irritability and disturbed sleep.
