What risperidone is used for
Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic — a group of medicines that calm overactive signalling in the brain. It treats schizophrenia, a long-term condition that can bring hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that are not there), delusions (beliefs not based in reality) and muddled thoughts. It is used in bipolar disorder, where mood swings between depression and mania, and for irritability in autistic disorder: aggression, temper tantrums and sudden shifts in mood. It eases symptoms rather than curing the condition underneath.
How it works, and when it starts to help
The brain passes messages with chemicals including dopamine and serotonin. Risperidone blocks some of the receptors those chemicals attach to, which turns down signals that run too high in psychosis and mania. Blood levels build steadily, so the tablets work only while they are taken regularly.
The first days are rarely the finished picture. Doses start low and are raised gradually, and calmer sleep or less agitation may arrive before the effect on delusions and hallucinations, which can take several weeks to develop.

Mealtimes do not matter for risperidone; steady timing does, so pick a time of day and keep to it. Alcohol and other sedating medicines add to the drowsiness, and driving can wait until you know how the tablets sit with you.
