What silicone gel does

Silicone gel goes on a scar that has healed but is still raised, red or itchy. Spread thin, it dries to a clear, flexible film that holds moisture in the top layer of skin. Kept moist like this, the scar tends to soften, lie flatter and itch and pull less. It is used on hypertrophic scars (raised, but inside the edges of the original wound) and on keloids (which grow past them), whether they followed surgery, a burn, an injury or acne.

How to apply it

Wash and dry the scar, squeeze out a very small amount and spread it into a thin film — enough to cover the area, no thicker. Let it set for a minute or two. Twice a day, morning and night, is the usual routine; once the film has dried it stays put and you can forget it is there. Nothing soaks into the skin, so the gel works as a dressing you cannot see. Scars change slowly, so think in months rather than weeks and keep going while the scar is still improving.

When to keep it off the skin

Put it on a scar only once the skin has closed. A scab, a stitch or a weeping patch means the area is not ready. If the skin under the film goes red or sore, wash the gel off and wait a day or two. On a scar that catches on a sleeve or waistband, the film can lift at the edge. Press it down, or smooth a fresh layer over it.

The silicone listing

Scarend Silicone Gel is a 15g tube of clear gel, small enough to keep on a shelf or in a washbag. Each dose is a film rather than a blob, so the tube goes a long way. Because it dries colourless it suits scars on the face, neck, hands and joint creases, where a patch would be awkward to keep in place. It sits in the Skin Care category alongside the other topical products.

How long does silicone gel take to work?

After a few weeks to a couple of months of twice-daily use you may notice the scar sitting lower, paler or less itchy, and it can keep changing for months. While it is still improving, keep going.

Can I use silicone gel on a new scar?

Yes, once the wound has closed completely and any scabs have dropped off. Starting early, while the scar is still red and firm, is when the gel tends to do most good. Keep it away from open wounds, stitches and infected skin.

Does silicone gel work on keloids?

It is used on keloids as well as raised scars, and it works the same way — sealing the surface and holding moisture in the tissue below. Keloids are often slower to settle than other scars, so plan on several months of steady use.

Can I use other creams on the scar at the same time?

Not under it. The gel needs clean, bare skin to set, so a cream beneath it leaves a film that never dries. Put the cream on at another time of day, and wash the scar before the gel goes on.

How much gel should I use each time?

Just enough to cover the scar in a thin layer. If it is still wet and sticky when you dress, you used too much. Spread it out with a clean fingertip.
