Tinidazole 500mg tablets treat infections caused by certain parasites and anaerobic bacteria, including trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, giardiasis and amoebiasis.
Tinidazole is a tablet that kills both bacteria and protozoa, the single-celled parasites such as the one behind trichomoniasis. It is swallowed, spreads through the whole body, and is taken for days at most. PockDose sells it as plain Tinidazole tablets at 500mg.
The infections it treats are mostly in the gut and genital tract. Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection, usually causes vaginal discharge and sometimes itching or pain when passing urine. Giardiasis is caught from contaminated water or food, and intestinal amoebiasis brings diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Bacterial vaginosis, where the balance of bacteria in the vagina shifts, is also treated with it, as are infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, the kind that thrive without oxygen.
Tinidazole only becomes active once it is inside the parasite or bacterium. There, in a low-oxygen setting, it is broken into compounds that cut up the organism's DNA, and without intact DNA it cannot multiply. Human cells do not have that low-oxygen chemistry, which is why the drug picks out these organisms and leaves the patient's own cells alone.
Take tinidazole with food; it sits more comfortably on the stomach that way. How long you take it depends on the infection — trichomoniasis and giardiasis usually clear with a single dose, while amoebic and anaerobic bacterial infections need several days of once-daily tablets. Swallow them with water. Keep the tablets in their foil until you need them, somewhere dry and out of direct sun.
Two things to know while you are on it. Alcohol reacts badly with tinidazole, bringing on flushing, nausea, vomiting, headache and a pounding heartbeat. And taken alongside warfarin, a blood thinner, tinidazole increases the blood-thinning effect, so bruising and bleeding become more likely.
The effect most people mention is a metallic taste, followed by nausea, stomach ache, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness. All of these tend to be mild and clear up when the course ends. Tingling or numbness in the hands and feet is less usual, and seizures are reported only rarely. Swelling of the mouth or throat with difficulty breathing is an allergic reaction and needs emergency care.
