Cortisol is the hormone the adrenal glands release, among other jobs to keep inflammation and immune activity in check. Triamcinolone is a lab-made relative of it, so a tablet turns down swelling, heat, redness and the immune reactions behind them. Mood changes — low mood, anxiety, excitability — weight gain, swollen feet or hands, a rounder face, and rising blood pressure and blood sugar are less common but matter more. Signs of high blood sugar include thirst, hunger, passing more urine, tiredness and blurry vision. Infections can take hold more easily and sores heal slowly; months of treatment can thin the bones.

An untreated infection is a reason to hold off, because triamcinolone can mask the signs that it is getting worse. Among medicines, aspirin and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen add to the stomach risk, mifepristone is not taken alongside it, and vaccines and other steroid medicines interact too.
