How alfuzosin eases an enlarged prostate
An enlarged prostate squeezes the tube that carries urine out of the bladder, so the stream weakens, the bladder never feels properly empty and nights are broken by trips to the toilet. Alfuzosin is an alpha blocker: it relaxes muscle in the prostate and bladder neck so urine passes more easily. It does not shrink the prostate and does not cure the condition, so the benefit lasts only while the tablets are taken.
How to take it
One 10mg extended-release tablet a day, straight after a meal — and after the same meal each day, because food changes how much of the medicine is absorbed. Swallow it whole; crushing, splitting or chewing releases the whole day's dose at once instead of slowly. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can raise the amount of alfuzosin in the blood, so keep them off the menu.
Dizziness and other side effects
Lightheadedness is most likely in the first week or two and when you stand up quickly; rising from bed in stages, sitting on the edge first, helps. Tiredness, headache, a blocked or runny nose, stomach pain, heartburn, constipation, nausea and reduced sexual ability are the other common complaints.
A rash with a swollen face, lips, tongue or throat, a hoarse voice, or trouble swallowing or breathing is an allergic reaction that needs urgent help. Fainting and chest pain are also urgent. Alfuzosin can make the iris less stable during cataract surgery.
Alfuzosin with other medicines
Blood pressure tablets add to the effect, and so do erectile dysfunction medicines such as sildenafil; taken together they can lower blood pressure far enough to cause dizziness or fainting. Cimetidine, a heartburn medicine sold over the counter, slows the breakdown of alfuzosin and pushes its level in the blood up. Certain antifungal and HIV medicines have a similar but stronger effect.
