FAQ
Which Ciprofloxacin strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Ciprofloxacin tablets come in 250mg and 500mg. The 250mg packs hold 30 to 180 tablets, and the 500mg packs run from 30 up to 360. Prices on each page are shown per tablet in Hong Kong dollars, and larger packs cost less per pack.
Can Ciprofloxacin be delivered to Hong Kong with tracking?
Yes. Tracked courier delivery for Ciprofloxacin takes 5 to 9 business days and gives you online tracking, which suits a longer course. If your parcel does not arrive within that window or turns up damaged, it is sent again free, or refunded if that is not possible.
Which brand names does ciprofloxacin have?
Brand names for ciprofloxacin include Ciloxan, Cipro, Cifran, Ciplox, Ciprobay and Zoxan. Ciprofloxacin tablets are a pure generic ciprofloxacin product and are not any of those brands. Here, ciprofloxacin can also be bought online as generic Ciloxan and generic Cipro.
Is Cipro the same as Ciprofloxacin?
Cipro is a brand name for ciprofloxacin, so the two are the same medicine. Tablets sold under either name contain ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, and a course is taken in the same way. What differs is the name on the box, not the ingredient inside.
Will Ciprofloxacin help a cold or flu?
No. Ciprofloxacin acts only on bacteria, and colds and flu are caused by viruses, so it cannot shorten them or ease the symptoms. Taking it for a viral illness does nothing for you and gives the bacteria in your body a chance to get used to the drug.
What is the difference between the 250mg and 500mg tablets?
Both hold the same antibiotic; the number tells you how much ciprofloxacin sits in each tablet. The strength chosen depends on the infection being treated, and a course normally stays on that one strength from start to finish.
Can I drink coffee while taking Ciprofloxacin?
Yes, though it may hit harder than usual. Ciprofloxacin slows the body's handling of caffeine, so a cup that normally does nothing can leave you restless or unable to sleep. If you get through several coffees, teas or energy drinks a day, trim them back for the length of the course.
About Ciprofloxacin
What Ciprofloxacin tablets are for
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It blocks the enzymes a bacterium depends on to copy and repair its DNA, so the cells stop dividing and your immune system can deal with what is left. It is used for infections of the urinary tract, the chest, the gut, the skin, and bones and joints. Viruses are not affected, so a cold or flu will not improve. Tablets come in 250mg and 500mg.
Taking a course
Take a bladder infection: a tablet in the morning and one in the evening for a few days, and it settles. If the infection has reached bone or joint, the same two tablets a day carry on for weeks. Each goes down with water, with or without a meal. Do not stop when you feel better, because the bacteria that remain are the hardier ones, and that is how resistance takes hold.
What side effects does Ciprofloxacin cause?
Most courses pass without much trouble. Nausea, loose stools, stomach pain, headache and dizziness are the complaints that come up most often, along with a metallic taste and skin that burns more easily in sunshine; these tend to settle as the days go by.
A handful of effects need quicker attention. Pain, swelling or a snap in a tendon — the Achilles tendon at the back of the heel is the commonest place — needs urgent treatment. So do numbness, pins and needles or a burning feeling in the hands and feet. A face, lip or throat that swells, or diarrhoea that turns bloody, is serious as well.
What interferes with a dose
Dairy catches people out. Milk, yoghurt and calcium-fortified drinks bind ciprofloxacin in the gut, as do indigestion remedies and iron, zinc or magnesium supplements, and less of the dose reaches your bloodstream. Take the tablet two hours before any of them, or six hours after.
Caffeine behaves differently: ciprofloxacin slows how fast your body clears it, so a strong coffee, cola or energy drink can leave you jittery or awake at night. Warfarin, a blood thinner, can act more strongly during a course, showing up as bruising or bleeding that is not expected.
