What domperidone tablets do
Domperidone 10mg tablets are an anti-sickness medicine. They calm nausea and stop vomiting, and they ease the heavy, bloated feeling and upper stomach pain that come with a stomach emptying more slowly than it should.
Two things happen at once. The muscle at the top of the stomach tightens while the muscle at the bottom relaxes, so food moves on in a steadier way and there is less chance of it coming back up. Domperidone also blocks the dopamine signal in the trigger zone at the base of the brain that starts the feeling of sickness.
Taking a tablet
Swallow one with water, ideally half an hour before a meal — that is when the stomach is about to start working and the medicine can do most good. You can take domperidone as you need it, up to three times a day, and it usually begins to work within 30 to 60 minutes. Courses are short, often about a week, rather than something to keep going for months. Store the strips away from heat and direct sunlight.
Side effects
Dry mouth is the most common complaint and is usually mild. Some people get a headache, diarrhoea or stomach cramps. Because domperidone raises the hormone prolactin, women may notice tender breasts, a little milk or changes to their periods. Rarely it disturbs the heart rhythm, and palpitations, a fluttering chest, dizziness or fainting need urgent treatment.
