What Elocon is for
Elocon is a mometasone furoate tube for the itchy, red, scaly patches of eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. Mometasone is a topical corticosteroid, a steroid that works on the skin where it is applied. Eczema and dermatitis show up as dry, inflamed patches and psoriasis as thick, scaly plaques; in each, the steroid calms the swelling, redness and itch behind them. It settles a flare while it is in use but does not cure any of the three. The mometasone page covers the ingredient in more depth.
Where it goes, and where it does not
On a flare, a thin film over the patch once a day is enough; rub it in gently until it disappears. Wash your hands afterwards, unless the patch you are treating is on your hands. Covering the area with an airtight dressing, plastic wrap or a tight bandage pushes more steroid into the skin than you need, so leave it open to the air. Keep it away from the eyes, eyelids and the inside of the mouth, and use only a small amount on the face. Skin that is weeping, crusting, hot or painful may be infected; leave it alone until it has cleared.
What you may notice, and what to watch for
The itch usually eases first, a few days in, with the redness and roughness following. A patch that looks the same after a week or two is probably not responding, and more of the steroid will not change that. Burning, stinging, itching, dryness or a mild rash where it goes on are the common effects. Repeated use on the same skin can thin it, leave stretch marks or make small blood vessels show. Heavy use over big areas, or under a covering, lets enough steroid into the body to dampen the body's own steroid production (adrenal suppression), which is rare with short courses. A rash that spreads after application, wheezing, or a swollen lip or tongue needs urgent help.

Each tube holds 5g, and you can choose a single tube or a pack of up to six. Keep the tube capped and out of strong sunlight, and check the date on it before starting a course.
