High blood pressure is the use most people know it for, but the same tablet is also taken for angina (chest pain from narrowed heart arteries), an irregular heartbeat, an overactive thyroid, some kinds of tremor and a thickened heart muscle that narrows the outlet from the heart, and sometimes after a heart attack. Propranolol blocks the effect of adrenaline on the heart, so the pulse slows and each beat is gentler. The heart does less work and blood pressure comes down.
