Lamictal is a tablet of lamotrigine, an anticonvulsant that quietens the bursts of electrical signalling which set off a seizure. In epilepsy it cuts how often seizures happen, whether it is taken alone or with other seizure medicines, and it is used in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a childhood epilepsy that also affects learning and development. For bipolar I disorder it keeps the stretches between depressive and manic episodes longer. It works in the background rather than stopping an episode that is already under way.
Why the first weeks are slow
Anyone starting Lamictal is given a small tablet and told to wait before moving up, and a rash is the reason. Serious skin reactions, meaning blistering or peeling skin, itchy welts, or raw patches in the mouth or near the eyes, mostly appear in the first two to eight weeks. A fast climb or a high first dose makes them likelier, so increases are small, with a week or two between each. Valproate raises the risk, and younger people are more susceptible than adults.
