Tight muscles that will not let go
A leg that stays stiff, resists every stretch and now and then kicks out in a spasm is what spasticity feels like, and baclofen is used for it when multiple sclerosis, a spinal cord injury or another spinal cord condition is behind it. The tablets ease the aching that comes with the tightness, make spasms rarer and milder, and leave more room for walking, dressing and getting about the house. A sore back after a day of gardening is a different matter; baclofen acts on signals from the spinal cord, not on strained muscle. Most people stay on it for months or years, usually one tablet three times a day across waking hours.
Choosing between Baclofen and Lioresal
Two baclofen products are sold here, both as tablets in 10mg and 25mg: Baclofen and Lioresal. Lioresal contains baclofen as its active ingredient; what separates the two products is the brand name on the pack. Tablets are the only form sold here, so there is no liquid version to weigh up. The first weeks on the tablets
Expect to feel sleepy. Dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea, constipation, tiredness and broken sleep come up too, and some people pass urine more often; most of this fades as the body gets used to the dose. Reactions can be slower while it does, so hold off on driving or machinery until you know how you respond. Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there), confusion and seizures are the serious effects, and a seizure needs urgent treatment.
Alcohol, other medicines and stopping
Alcohol makes the drowsiness and dizziness worse, and so do other medicines that quiet the brain: sleeping tablets, sedatives, tranquilisers, medicines for anxiety, antidepressants, antipsychotics and epilepsy medicines. After months of regular use, particularly at higher doses, stopping suddenly can bring on seizures, fever, confusion, stiff muscles or hallucinations, so the dose is reduced in steps instead.
