Premature ejaculation, finishing sooner than a man or his partner would like on most occasions, is what dapoxetine was developed to treat. It is an SSRI, the class that includes many antidepressants, and it raises serotonin signalling between nerve cells. That holds back the reflex which triggers ejaculation, so stimulation has to continue longer before climax. Antidepressant SSRIs are taken daily for weeks to build up; dapoxetine is absorbed and cleared within hours, so it is used only when sex is expected. Erections and sex drive are not what it acts on.
