Nizoral Cream 2% is a 15g tube of ketoconazole 2% antifungal cream for athlete's foot, ringworm, jock itch and seborrhoeic dermatitis on the skin.
Ketoconazole is an imidazole antifungal. It blocks a step in the building of ergosterol, the sterol that holds a fungal cell membrane together. Without it, the fungus cannot keep its outer barrier intact, so it stops growing and the skin or tissue underneath gets a chance to recover. The same ingredient turns up here in two quite different jobs: a tablet that works through the body, and a cream that stays on the skin where you put it.
Two oral listings carry the ingredient at 200mg: Ketoconazole tablets and Nizoral. Both are swallowed once a day, at about the same time each day. Oral ketoconazole is for fungal infections that something rubbed on the surface will not solve. A course can run for months; some infections need six months or more to clear completely. Feeling better is not the same as being clear of the infection, and stopping early is a common reason for it to come back.
Nizoral Cream 2% is a 15g tube of the topical form. It is used for athlete's foot, ringworm, jock itch and seborrhoeic dermatitis, the flaky, itchy condition that settles on the scalp, eyebrows and the sides of the nose. A cream like this suits small, defined patches: between the toes, in the groin folds, a ring-shaped area on the arm. Clean and dry the skin first, then spread a thin layer over the patch and a little of the skin around it.
The cream is generally easy to tolerate. Stinging, burning, dryness or itch where it goes on are the usual complaints. The tablets are a heavier treatment. Serious liver damage is possible with oral ketoconazole, even in someone whose liver was fine beforehand; extreme tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, pain in the upper right of the stomach, fever and rash are the signs that point to it. Oral ketoconazole can also disturb heart rhythm, and it interacts with a long list of medicines, among them quinidine and dofetilide, methadone, simvastatin and midazolam. Alcohol and the tablets do not go together, because drinking raises the risk of liver damage.
