What you will receive
Abilify is the originator brand name, made by Otsuka Pharmaceuticals. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Abilify.
- The same active ingredient (Aripiprazole) at the same strength.
- The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.
FAQ
Which generic Abilify strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Generic Abilify comes as tablets in 5mg, 10mg, 15mg, 20mg and 30mg strengths, with packs from 30 to 180 tablets. This is generic aripiprazole, not the original Abilify. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
What delivery options are there for generic Abilify in Hong Kong?
For longer courses of generic Abilify, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, and is untracked. Very large orders may be split into several parcels.
What are the alternative names for Abilify and aripiprazole?
Abilify is a brand name of aripiprazole, which is also sold as Arip. Here, aripiprazole can be bought online as generic Abilify. These are generics, not the original brand.
How long does Abilify take to work?
Not overnight. Something may change in the first couple of weeks, and the full picture can take a month or more. The low starting strength and the step-ups that follow are paced to that.
Can I drink alcohol with Abilify?
Better to go easy. Alcohol and aripiprazole both pull towards drowsiness and unsteadiness, so a drink that is usually fine can feel stronger than expected. Trying the tablets for a while before drinking at all is the cautious route.
What is the difference between the Abilify strengths?
Each strength holds a different amount of aripiprazole — 5mg up to 30mg — so the tablet you take decides the dose. They are all the same medicine in the same tablet form, and because the tablets are swallowed whole, a dose change means a different strength rather than half a tablet.
Does Abilify cause weight gain?
It can. Weight gain is a recognised effect of antipsychotic treatment and aripiprazole is no exception, though for many people the change is modest. Blood sugar and cholesterol can shift as well, and these are the changes worth keeping an eye on over a long course.
Does Abilify interact with other medicines?
A few do. Ketoconazole and clarithromycin slow the body's clearing of aripiprazole and can raise the amount in your system, while carbamazepine speeds it up and lowers it. Antidepressants including fluoxetine and paroxetine also slow clearance, so the same strength can behave differently alongside them.
About Abilify
Aripiprazole for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
Aripiprazole is an antipsychotic. It is used for schizophrenia, an illness that changes how a person thinks, feels and behaves, and for bipolar disorder, where mood swings between depression and mania. It is also used alongside antidepressants in major depressive disorder. These are generic aripiprazole tablets rather than the original Abilify brand.
How it works
Most antipsychotics work by turning dopamine down. Aripiprazole is different: it sits on the same receptors but only partly switches them on, a middle setting rather than off, and it acts on serotonin receptors as well. Do not expect a quick result. Improvement comes gradually over two weeks or more, and because the tablets control the illness rather than cure it, symptoms generally return once they are stopped.
Taking the tablets
One tablet a day, swallowed whole — the tablets are not made to be split, crushed or chewed. Food makes no difference to how much you absorb, so a meal or an empty stomach both work. Settle on a time of day that fits your routine and stay with it, and keep the pack in a cool, dark place. It is a regular daily medicine rather than something taken only when symptoms flare.
Side effects and interactions
Akathisia — an inner restlessness that makes sitting still hard — is the complaint people notice most, along with nausea, poor sleep, dizziness, extra saliva and tiredness in the early weeks. Antipsychotics can also push up weight and blood sugar. High fever with stiff muscles and confusion needs urgent treatment. With long use, some people develop movements of the face or tongue they cannot control. A few other medicines change how quickly the body clears aripiprazole, which can shift how much stays in your system.
Which strength to order
Tablets come in 5mg, 10mg, 15mg, 20mg and 30mg. Treatment generally starts at the lower end and is stepped up over the first weeks, so 5mg or 10mg often covers the early stage and a higher strength comes later. The strengths all contain the same medicine; they differ only in how much aripiprazole each tablet carries. Pick the strength that matches your course and a pack size that covers the stretch you have in mind.
