What you will receive
Augmentin is the originator brand name, made by GSK. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Augmentin.
- The same active ingredient (Amoxicillin / Clavulanic Acid) at the same strength.
- The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.
FAQ
Which Augmentin strengths can I order?
Augmentin is offered as generic amoxicillin + clavulanate tablets in 250/125mg, 500/125mg, 750/250mg and 875/125mg, in packs from 10 to 270 tablets. The pack contains generic amoxicillin + clavulanate, not the original Augmentin.
Can I pay for Augmentin with Bitcoin?
Yes. You can pay with Visa, Mastercard or American Express on a secure, encrypted payment page, or with Bitcoin or Ethereum, and card details never reach the shop's servers. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if they have not yet been dispatched.
Does Augmentin have other names?
Augmentin is a brand name of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, which are also sold as Co-amoxiclav. Here, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid can be bought online as generic Augmentin, and also as Advent DT. These are generics, not the original brand.
How is Augmentin different from plain amoxicillin?
They share the same antibiotic, but Augmentin adds clavulanate. That second ingredient disarms the enzymes some bacteria produce to break amoxicillin down, so infections caused by those bacteria can still be treated. Plain amoxicillin is enough when the bacteria involved do not make those enzymes.
Can I drink alcohol with Augmentin?
A drink now and then is not a problem: alcohol is not known to interact with either ingredient. Heavy drinking can make nausea, stomach upset and dizziness worse, which is the last thing you want while fighting an infection. Ease off until the course is finished.
How quickly does Augmentin work?
Fever and pain often ease within the first two or three days, though the pace depends on the infection and how long it has been there. Tablets that seem to be doing nothing after several days suggest the infection may not be bacterial.
What does the 125mg in Augmentin refer to?
That figure is the clavulanate content. Most strengths hold it steady at 125mg and raise only the amoxicillin, from 250mg through 500mg to 875mg. The 750mg tablet breaks the pattern, carrying 250mg of clavulanate.
Does Augmentin affect the contraceptive pill?
No. Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid does not make the pill, patch, ring or injection less reliable. If the tablets cause vomiting or severe diarrhoea, though, a pill taken around then may not be absorbed.
About Augmentin
What the tablets treat
Augmentin is used for bacterial chest infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, and for sinus, ear and throat infections. Skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections and dental infections that have spread are treated with it too. Viral illnesses such as colds and flu do not respond to it at all.
How the two ingredients work together
Amoxicillin belongs to the penicillin family. It stops bacteria from building the walls that hold them together, so they cannot grow and multiply. Some bacteria fight back with enzymes called beta-lactamases, which chop the amoxicillin molecule apart before it can reach them. Clavulanate blocks those enzymes; on its own it barely kills bacteria. Its role is to keep amoxicillin intact so that stubborn infections can still be treated.
Taking Augmentin
Swallow a tablet with water. Dosing is usually every 8 or 12 hours, so two or three doses across the day, spread as evenly as you can. A meal helps if the tablets upset your stomach; otherwise food makes little difference.
Forgot a dose? Take it when you think of it, as long as the next dose is more than a couple of hours away. If it is close, wait rather than doubling up.
Finish the pack even after you feel better — an infection that is only partly cleared can return, and the bacteria left behind may be harder to treat.
Side effects to watch for
Nausea, loose stools and an unsettled stomach are common and usually ease after a few days. A mild rash, itching, or thrush in the mouth or vagina can also appear, as the antibiotic changes the balance of germs in the body.
A few reactions are serious. Hives, swelling around the face, lips, tongue or throat, wheezing or trouble swallowing point to an allergic reaction that needs urgent treatment. Diarrhoea that turns severe or bloody, during the course or later, can be a sign of a serious bowel problem. Clavulanate can also affect the liver, which shows as jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes or the skin), dark urine and unusual tiredness.
Strengths and storage
The tablets come in four strengths: 250mg of amoxicillin with 125mg of clavulanate, 500mg with 125mg, 875mg with 125mg, and 750mg with 250mg. On the first three, clavulanate stays at 125mg, so a higher strength means more amoxicillin; the 750mg tablet also carries more clavulanate. Packs range from 10 to 270 tablets, and the strips keep best in their box, in a dry spot away from heat.
