FAQ
Which Bactrim strengths can I order?
Bactrim is offered as generic sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim tablets in 400/80mg and 800/160mg, in packs from 10 to 360 tablets. It is generic sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim, not the original Bactrim, and the page shows the price per tablet in Hong Kong dollars.
How is a long Bactrim order delivered?
Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking and suits larger orders, while standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, 30 at most, and is untracked. Everything ships in plain, unbranded packaging, and very large orders over 120 units may be split into parcels.
What are the alternative names for Bactrim?
Bactrim is a brand name of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which are also sold as Septra and Septrin. Here, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can be bought online as generic Bactrim, and also as co-trimoxazole tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
Is Bactrim the same as co-trimoxazole?
Yes. Co-trimoxazole is the generic name for the pair of antibiotics in Bactrim — sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim — and Bactrim is one of the brand names that combination has been sold under. The tablets here contain that same pair, so the name on the box is the main difference.
How long does Bactrim take to work?
Most people feel better within a few days. Stopping at that point is the common mistake: the infection can flare up again, and the bacteria left behind are the ones the antibiotic failed to kill. If a few days pass with no change at all, this combination may not cover the bacteria causing the infection.
What is the difference between the 400/80mg and 800/160mg Bactrim tablets?
They hold the same two drugs in the same 4:1 ratio, so 800/160mg is simply the double-strength version of 400/80mg. Which size a course uses comes down to the infection and how many tablets a day are needed; both are sold in packs of 10 up to 360 tablets.
Does Bactrim make your skin sensitive to sunlight?
It can. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide, and antibiotics in that group often make skin burn more easily. While the course lasts, cover up, wear sunscreen and keep out of long spells of strong sun. The sensitivity fades once the tablets are finished.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Bactrim?
There is no specific reaction between co-trimoxazole and alcohol, but the tablets can leave you queasy or light-headed, and a drink adds to that. Keeping alcohol light until the course is finished is the comfortable choice.
About Bactrim
Bactrim is the brand name most people know for co-trimoxazole, a combination antibiotic built from sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The tablets sold here are the generic version of that pair, in two sizes — 400/80mg and 800/160mg — and packs run from 10 up to 360 tablets. The same combination also appears as Co-trimoxazole, named after the combination, in the same two strengths. Store the strips below 25°C, out of reach of children.
Infections Bactrim treats
If you searched for Bactrim, a urinary tract infection is the likeliest reason: cystitis with its burning, urgency and repeat trips to the toilet. The same tablets are also used for bronchitis and other chest infections, for some bowel infections such as travellers' diarrhoea, and for skin infections. Only bacteria respond; a cold, flu or sore throat caused by a virus will not..
Two drugs, one tablet
A single antibiotic aimed at one weak point lets some bacteria slip past. Bactrim hits the same pathway twice. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim each block a different enzyme that bacteria need to make folate, a B vitamin their DNA depends on, so a germ that shrugs off one step still runs into the other. People do not make folate this way (we take it in from food), which is why the target is the bacteria rather than you.
Getting through a course of Bactrim
Say the burning has eased by day three and the bathroom trips are back to normal. The infection is not necessarily gone: the bacteria that survive a short course can come back and are tougher to treat the second time, so the tablets are used for the full length set for the infection. Doses are spread through the day, two to four of them, to keep the level in the blood even. Nausea, vomiting and a poor appetite are the common complaints, and eating a little with each tablet usually settles them. Water through the day is part of the course too.
A handful of effects need urgent treatment: swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a rash that blisters or peels, fever with a sore throat, unexplained bruising or bleeding, or yellowing of the eyes and skin. Severe diarrhoea — watery or bloody, with or without stomach cramps — can start during the course or up to two months after it finishes, and needs the same urgent response. Co-trimoxazole also makes skin burn more easily, so cover up in strong sun.
Can you take Bactrim with other medicines?
Warfarin and similar blood thinners become stronger alongside co-trimoxazole, raising the risk of bleeding. Some diuretics (water tablets), blood-pressure medicines and diabetes tablets interact as well, and the antibiotic can push up the levels of phenytoin and methotrexate in the body.
