FAQ
What pack sizes of Bromhexine 8mg tablets can I order?
Bromhexine comes as 8mg tablets, in packs of 200 or 400 tablets. This is generic bromhexine, not a branded product. Each page shows the price per tablet in Hong Kong dollars; the larger pack lowers the price per tablet.
Can my Bromhexine order be split for delivery to Hong Kong?
Very large Bromhexine orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels. Every order ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free, or refunded if that is not possible.
What are the other names for bromhexine?
A brand name for bromhexine is Bisolvon. Bromhexine tablets are a pure generic bromhexine product and are not that brand.
How long can you take bromhexine for?
Bromhexine is meant for short spells, around a week. A chesty cough lasting longer than that, or arriving with fever, thick yellow or green phlegm, blood, night sweats or weight loss, has a cause that thinning mucus will not fix.
Does bromhexine work for a dry cough?
No. A dry cough has no mucus to loosen, and bromhexine only helps when there is phlegm to clear. For a dry, tickly cough it does nothing useful, and it can leave the throat feeling just as irritated.
How is bromhexine different from guaifenesin?
Both help you cough up mucus. Bromhexine is a mucolytic that thins and loosens it, whereas guaifenesin is an expectorant that is said to add fluid to airway secretions. They are often combined in cough syrups.
Will bromhexine make me cough more at first?
Possibly. As mucus loosens, you may cough up more and thinner phlegm for a day or two, which is the medicine doing its job. The cough should become easier and more productive as the congestion clears.
About Bromhexine
A chesty cough that brings up nothing, or phlegm so thick it will not move, is the situation bromhexine is made for. These are 8mg bromhexine tablets, a mucolytic (mucus-loosening) medicine for adults.
What bromhexine does
It makes the mucus in your airways thinner and less sticky and helps the airway lining move it upward, so what you cough is easier to bring up. People use it for excess mucus and chest congestion with colds, bronchitis and other chest conditions. It is not a cough suppressant. The aim is a cough that works, not one that stops.
Taking the tablets
Meals do not matter. Adults take one or two 8mg tablets every 8 hours, so three doses at most in a day, and a glass of water with each helps keep the mucus thin. Use them while you are bringing up phlegm, then stop; they are not a daily habit. Missed one? Skip it if the next is close, and never double up.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea are the common ones, and they are usually mild and short-lived. Bromhexine can irritate the stomach lining, so a history of stomach ulcers is a reason for extra care. An itchy rash, swelling of the face or lips, or trouble breathing is an allergic reaction, and rare severe skin reactions with blistering in the mouth or on the skin are another reason to stop the tablets and get urgent help. Do not combine it with a cough suppressant such as codeine or dextromethorphan: the mucus would be loosened but the cough needed to clear it would be switched off.
Store the tablets in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Bromhexine on its own
This listing is the plain tablet, one ingredient only. The bromhexine page covers how the ingredient works, its other forms and the combination syrup that also contains bromhexine.
