  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

What pack sizes of Buscopan tablets can I order?

Buscopan comes as 10mg tablets, in packs of 60, 90, 120 or 180 tablets. It is generic hyoscine butylbromide, not the original Buscopan. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How can I pay for Buscopan delivery to Hong Kong?

Pay for Buscopan by Visa, Mastercard or American Express on a secure, encrypted page, or by Bitcoin or Ethereum. Card details never reach the shop's servers. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched. Support answers 24/7 in English and Cantonese by live chat.

Does Buscopan stop diarrhoea?

No. Hyoscine butylbromide relaxes the muscle spasm behind cramping pain, but it does not slow the bowel or firm up loose stools, and it does nothing to an infection. If diarrhoea is your main problem, Buscopan is not the medicine that will settle it.

Is Buscopan the same as hyoscine travel sickness tablets?

They are different medicines made from the same parent compound. Travel-sickness hyoscine (scopolamine) is absorbed into the bloodstream and reaches the brain, which is why it can make you drowsy; hyoscine butylbromide acts in the gut wall and is not used for motion sickness.

Can I take Buscopan with antihistamines or other medicines that dry you up?

They can add to each other. Antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, some antipsychotics and other antispasmodics all have anticholinergic effects, so alongside Buscopan they are more likely to leave you with a dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation or difficulty passing urine.

Can I drink alcohol with Buscopan?

There is no known interaction between the two, so an occasional drink is unlikely to cause a problem. Alcohol is a common trigger for IBS cramps and loose stools, though, so a heavy night may leave your gut feeling worse rather than better.

Does Buscopan make you sleepy?

Not usually. Hyoscine butylbromide is designed to act on the gut wall and very little of it reaches the brain, so it is not a sedating medicine. Tiredness during a bad spell of cramps is more often down to broken sleep and the pain itself.

About Buscopan

Buscopan 10mg for cramping belly pain

Buscopan is hyoscine butylbromide 10mg, an antispasmodic, which means it quietens muscle spasm. Its main job is the cramping of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the common gut condition behind bloating, urgent trips and a belly that tightens and releases. The same tablets are used when spasm sits in the bile ducts or the urinary tract. Because the target is the spasming muscle, ordinary painkillers and this tablet do different things: Buscopan does not dull pain across the whole body.

Why it works on the gut wall

The stomach and bowel are lined with smooth muscle, and nerve signals tell that muscle when to squeeze. Hyoscine butylbromide blocks the signal where it reaches the muscle, so the spasm eases while normal digestion carries on. Very little of it gets past the gut wall into the rest of the body, and hardly any reaches the brain, so it does not work like the hyoscine used for travel sickness. If you want the ingredient in more detail, there is a page for hyoscine butylbromide.

When a spasm starts

Keep the strip somewhere you can reach it — most people take a tablet at the first sign of cramping, with a glass of water; food makes no difference either way. Adults commonly take one or two 10mg tablets at a time, up to four times in a day, and no more than that. A dry place out of direct sun keeps the tablets in good condition for longer, so a drawer or cupboard beats a sunny windowsill.

What you may notice

A dry mouth and slightly blurred vision are the effects people mention most. They come from the way the medicine damps down nerve signals to glands and to the tiny muscles that focus the eye, and they usually wear off once you stop taking it. Constipation, dizziness, a racing heartbeat and trouble passing urine are less common. A painful red eye with blurred vision and halos around lights, or being unable to pass urine at all, needs treatment rather than another tablet. Buscopan is not used by people with glaucoma, myasthenia gravis (a condition that causes muscle weakness) or a blocked bowel.
