FAQ
Which Citalopram strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Citalopram tablets come as generic citalopram hydrobromide in 10mg and 20mg. Pack sizes run from 30 to 360 tablets, with options such as 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
Can I cancel my Citalopram order before delivery to Hong Kong?
You can cancel a Citalopram order within 24 hours if it has not yet been dispatched. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, and is untracked.
Which brand names does citalopram have?
Brand names for citalopram include Celexa, Cipramil and Cital. Citalopram tablets are a pure generic citalopram product and are not any of those brands. Here, citalopram can also be bought online as generic Celexa.
How long does citalopram take to work?
It works slowly rather than in a day. The first fortnight is often the least rewarding, when side effects may arrive before any benefit; the steady change in mood tends to show between weeks four and six and continues to build after that.
Can citalopram make anxiety worse at first?
Sometimes. A restless, jittery first week or two is fairly common before the calming effect develops, and it usually fades as the dose settles. Citalopram is used for anxiety as well as depression, including panic attacks.
Can I drink alcohol with citalopram?
There is no outright ban, but alcohol deepens the drowsiness and light-headedness the tablets can cause, and a night of heavy drinking can drag mood down the next day. A drink with a meal is unlikely to cause trouble; regular heavy drinking works against the treatment.
What is the difference between citalopram and escitalopram?
Escitalopram is the close relative that contains only one half of the citalopram molecule, so it is dosed in smaller milligrams, usually 10mg or 20mg once a day. Both are SSRIs used for depression and anxiety and both come as tablets.
Can I stop citalopram suddenly?
A sudden stop often brings dizziness, tingling, vivid dreams, nausea and a flu-like feeling that can last a week or two, so the dose is normally lowered in steps instead. The symptoms come from the brain adjusting to lower serotonin levels, not from the medicine being addictive.
About Citalopram
What citalopram is used for
Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), the most common family of antidepressants. It is taken for depression and for anxiety, including panic attacks. Generic citalopram hydrobromide tablets come in 10mg and 20mg, in packs of 30 to 360.
How it works, and how long it takes
Serotonin is one of the chemical messengers that nerve cells in the brain use to signal each other. Once a signal has passed, cells usually take serotonin back up again; citalopram slows that reuptake, so more of it stays in the gaps between cells. Nothing happens in the first hour. The effect builds with steady daily dosing and is often clear after four to six weeks, with sleep and appetite sometimes improving before mood does.
Taking a daily dose
One tablet a day, at about the same time each day. If citalopram leaves you drowsy, an evening dose sits better; if it keeps you awake, take it in the morning. Food makes no difference. Alcohol is not off-limits, but it adds to the drowsiness and dizziness. Stopping overnight can bring dizziness, tingling and vivid dreams, so the dose is usually lowered in steps over a few weeks.
Side effects
Nausea, dry mouth, headache, sweating, loose stools and disturbed sleep are the usual ones, most noticeable in the first week or two before they settle. Fever with shivering, stiff muscles, agitation and a racing heartbeat needs urgent treatment. Older people can develop low sodium, which shows as confusion, weakness or unsteadiness. SSRIs also make bleeding slightly more likely, especially alongside aspirin or anti-inflammatories.
Other medicines and choosing a strength
Citalopram is never combined with an MAOI, and a fortnight is left between the two. Tramadol, triptans, St John's wort and some other antidepressants can push serotonin too high; aspirin, ibuprofen and blood thinners add to the bleeding risk. Adults usually start at 20mg once a day; 10mg suits a gentler start and is the usual choice for older people. Both strengths come in the same range of pack sizes.
