FAQ
Which strengths and pack sizes of generic Coumadin can I order?
Generic Coumadin is available as 1mg, 2mg and 5mg tablets. Packs range from 20 to 360 tablets depending on strength. It is generic warfarin, not the original Coumadin. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How discreet is delivery of generic Coumadin to Hong Kong?
Every order of generic Coumadin ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free; if that is not possible, the order is refunded.
What is another name for warfarin?
Coumadin is a brand name of warfarin, which is also sold as Jantoven and Marevan. Here, warfarin can be bought online as generic Coumadin. These are generics, not the original brand.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Coumadin?
Alcohol and warfarin do not sit well together. A heavy session can push the INR up and make bleeding more likely, and the effect can last a day or two. The pattern matters more than any single drink, so a steady small intake is easier to handle than dry spells broken by a big night.
How long does warfarin take to work?
Several days. The clotting factors already in your blood have to be used up before clotting slows and the INR reaches its target, so the first week is the least predictable. A faster-acting blood thinner is often given alongside at the start.
How often do I need blood tests on warfarin?
The INR is checked every few days at the start while the dose is being worked out, and again whenever something changes — a new medicine, a dose adjustment, an illness. Once readings are steady, testing usually moves to about once a month.
Do antibiotics interact with warfarin?
Yes, and they are among the commonest reasons for an unsteady INR. Some upset the gut bacteria that make vitamin K, others slow how fast the liver clears warfarin. The reading can shift within days of starting a course.
About Coumadin
What Coumadin is
Coumadin is the brand name warfarin has been sold under for decades. The tablets here are generic warfarin sodium in 1mg, 2mg and 5mg, the same ingredient under a different name on the pack.
Warfarin is an anticoagulant, often called a blood thinner. It cannot clear a clot that is already there; the body does that over weeks. What it does is slow clotting, so new clots are less likely to form and existing ones less likely to grow.
What warfarin is used for
Atrial fibrillation is a heartbeat where the upper chambers quiver and blood can pool; warfarin lowers the chance of a stroke from it. It also treats a clot in a leg vein or one that has reached the lungs, and then continues for months to stop another. Some people with a mechanical heart valve or a recent heart attack or stroke take it too. It is not used in pregnancy, because it crosses the placenta.
Taking your daily tablet
Take one tablet a day with a drink, ideally in the same part of the day; meals do not affect it. How much you take depends on your INR, a blood test that measures how fast a sample clots, and the strength is adjusted to that result. Early on the test comes every few days, and once readings settle it drops to every few weeks.
Vitamin K is what warfarin works against, so steady eating beats strict eating. Spinach, kale, broccoli and green tea are fine in ordinary amounts; it is a sudden swing — a week of daily salads, or cutting greens out altogether — that moves the reading.
Keep the strips in a drawer or cabinet, dry and shaded.
Bleeding and bruising
You will bruise more easily. Knocks you do not remember leave marks, gums spot blood when you brush, noses bleed more often and small cuts stay open longer.
Black tarry stools, blood in urine or vomit, a sudden severe headache, or weakness and dizziness with no cause need urgent treatment. The effect also outlasts the last tablet: clotting returns to normal over about two to five days.
Other medicines that matter
The interaction list is long. Aspirin, ibuprofen and similar painkillers add to bleeding risk by irritating the stomach lining. Many antibiotics, antifungals and heart medicines move the INR, sometimes within days. St John's wort can weaken warfarin, and ginkgo can make bleeding more likely.
