What you will receive

Effexor Xr is the originator brand name, made by Pfizer. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Effexor Xr.

  • The same active ingredient (Venlafaxine) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

What Effexor Xr strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Effexor Xr comes as capsules in 75mg and 150mg, in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 270. This is generic venlafaxine, not the original Effexor Xr. Larger packs cost less per capsule.

How is Effexor Xr delivered to Hong Kong?

Effexor Xr orders to Hong Kong can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched. Order tracking is on the tracking page, and support answers 24/7 in English and Cantonese by live chat. Parcels ship in plain, unbranded packaging. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.

Does Effexor XR have other names?

Effexor XR is a brand name of venlafaxine, which is also sold as Viepax. Here, venlafaxine can be bought online as generic Effexor XR, and also as Venlor. These are generics, not the original brand.

What does the XR in Effexor Xr mean?

XR stands for extended release. The capsule lets venlafaxine out gradually over the day rather than all at once, which is why one capsule daily is enough and why it has to be swallowed whole. Plain venlafaxine tablets release the medicine quickly and are taken more often.

How long does Effexor Xr take to work?

It builds up slowly. The full effect on mood and anxiety usually takes several weeks and sometimes longer. The dose is raised step by step rather than all at once, so steady daily use over that stretch is what makes the difference.

Can I stop Effexor Xr suddenly?

Stopping abruptly is the usual cause of withdrawal effects: dizziness, nausea, headache, agitation, anxiety and brief electric-shock-like feelings in the arms and legs. Coming off in stages, with smaller doses over time, lets the body adjust instead.

Does Effexor Xr affect sex drive or orgasm?

Yes, for some people. A lower sex drive, delayed ejaculation and difficulty reaching orgasm are among the sexual effects reported with venlafaxine, and they can last as long as the medicine is taken.

Can I take St John's wort with Effexor Xr?

St John's wort lifts serotonin on its own, so using it with venlafaxine can push serotonin too high. That combination is linked to serotonin syndrome, with agitation, sweating, shivering, stiff muscles and a fast heartbeat.

About Effexor Xr

What Effexor Xr is for

Effexor Xr is a venlafaxine capsule built to release its medicine slowly through the day. Venlafaxine is an SNRI, a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, and it works by leaving more of these two chemical messengers available between nerve cells, which steadies mood and eases persistent worry. It is used for depression and for generalised anxiety disorder (worry that is constant and hard to control). It also has a place in social anxiety disorder (extreme fear of social situations) and panic disorder, and is sometimes used for hot flushes. The capsules come in 75mg and 150mg.

Taking a capsule

One capsule a day, morning or evening, with food, and at a steady hour each day. Swallow it whole: splitting, chewing or crushing it, or letting it soak in water, spoils the slow release. If swallowing capsules is difficult, the whole contents can be tipped onto a spoonful of applesauce, swallowed straight away without chewing, and followed with a glass of water. Doses are usually started low and raised step by step, and several weeks can pass before the full benefit shows. Stopping suddenly is not a good idea; the dose is reduced in stages instead.

Side effects to expect, and the ones that matter

Nausea, dry mouth, headache, sweating, drowsiness, dizziness, disturbed sleep, poor appetite and constipation are the effects people report most, and many of them ease as the body adjusts. Sexual effects such as a lower sex drive or delayed orgasm are also common. Blood pressure can creep up. Worsening depression, agitation or thoughts of harming yourself, especially in the first weeks or after a dose change, need urgent treatment. Fever with shivering, stiff muscles, heavy sweating and a racing heartbeat points to too much serotonin. Stopping abruptly brings dizziness, nausea, headache, agitation and short electric-shock-like feelings.

What it should not be mixed with

An MAO inhibitor (phenelzine, tranylcypromine, selegiline, linezolid) and venlafaxine do not go together; the pairing can flood the body with serotonin. Tramadol, migraine triptans and St John's wort add to the same risk.

The rest of the venlafaxine range

Effexor is the quick-release tablet, sold as 37.5mg and 75mg and taken two or three times a day with food. Venlor is a 75mg capsule. This listing, Effexor Xr, is the slow-release capsule and the only one here in 150mg, with packs running from 30 capsules up to 270. The venlafaxine page covers the ingredient itself.
