FAQ
Which Elavil strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Elavil comes as 10mg, 25mg and 50mg tablets in packs of 30 to 360 tablets. This is generic amitriptyline, not the original Elavil. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Elavil delivered to Hong Kong?
Elavil can be sent by tracked courier, which takes 5 to 9 business days and includes online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, or 30 at most, and is untracked. Every order arrives in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents.
What other names is amitriptyline sold under?
Elavil and Endep are brand names of amitriptyline, which is also sold as Laroxyl, Tryptizol and Tryptomer. Here, amitriptyline can be bought online as generic Elavil, and also as amitriptyline tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
How long does Elavil take to work for depression?
Amitriptyline builds up slowly. The first changes in mood usually appear after a few weeks, and the full effect can take six to eight weeks of steady dosing. Nerve pain and migraine prevention often need several weeks as well, which is why the dose is raised in steps rather than judged after a few days.
Can I stop taking Elavil suddenly?
Coming off amitriptyline too quickly can cause nausea, headache and a drained, low-energy feeling. Reducing the dose in steps over a few weeks avoids most of this, and the last step is usually the smallest one.
Does Elavil make you sleepy?
Yes. Drowsiness is one of amitriptyline's main effects, which is why a once-daily dose is usually taken in the evening. It is strongest during the first week or two and often eases after that, though some people feel a little groggy in the mornings for as long as they take it.
Can I take Elavil with antihistamines or a sleeping tablet?
They add to each other. Antihistamines and night-time sleep aids have drying and sedating effects of their own, so combined with amitriptyline they can worsen dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision and next-day drowsiness.
About Elavil
What Elavil is for
Amitriptyline, sold here as Elavil, belongs to the tricyclic antidepressants, a group in use since the 1960s. It eases depression by raising the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that keep mood steady. The same medicine is used for nerve pain that lingers after shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia) and to cut down how often migraines come. It is sedating, so people taking it for pain often have their dose in the evening.
Taking your tablets
Elavil tablets are swallowed with water. Most people take one dose a day, though a larger daily amount can be split into two, three or four. A course begins with 10mg or 25mg tablets, and the 50mg strength is for higher maintenance amounts later on. Pain and migraine prevention usually need less than depression does. The benefit takes a few weeks to build, so the first tablets may seem to do very little.
Side effects
Dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision and sweating are the everyday ones, along with drowsiness and a light-headed feeling when you stand up quickly. They are usually worst in the first week or two and ease after that. Weight gain tends to creep in over months. A fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat, or fainting, needs urgent treatment. Confusion and clumsy, unsteady movement are rarer effects. Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing, is an allergic reaction and also needs urgent help.
Elavil and other amitriptyline tablets
Elavil is the older brand name; the tablets sold here are generic amitriptyline, with the same active ingredient. The Amitriptyline listing runs from 10mg up to 75mg, so a single 75mg tablet is available there, where Elavil stops at 50mg. Otherwise the difference between the two comes down to the strength range and the pack size you pick.
Alcohol, other medicines and storage
Drinking alcohol on amitriptyline deepens the drowsiness and dizziness, and a few drinks can leave you unsteady on your feet. Amitriptyline is not combined with an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor, another older antidepressant); the two together can cause a dangerous reaction. Sleeping tablets, opioid painkillers and antihistamines all add to its effects, and the drying, constipating and sedating side effects get worse when they are taken together. Keep the tablets in their packaging in a cool, dry spot away from direct light.
