FAQ

Which Enalapril strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Enalapril tablets come in 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg. For each strength, pack sizes range from 30 to 360 tablets. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Enalapril delivered to Hong Kong for a long course?

For longer Enalapril courses, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, or 30 at most, and is untracked. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched.

What are the other names for enalapril?

Brand names for enalapril include Vasotec, Envas, Glioten, Renitec and Innovace. Enalapril tablets are a pure generic enalapril product and are not any of those brands.

How long does enalapril take to work?

Pressure starts to ease within an hour or two of a dose, and each dose works through the day. The full effect of a steady dose builds over two to four weeks, so a single high reading in the first days does not mean the tablets are failing.

Can I drink alcohol with enalapril?

A drink or two can leave you more lightheaded than usual, because alcohol adds to the pressure-lowering effect; the dizziness often shows when you stand up. Heavy, regular drinking works the other way and pushes blood pressure back up.

Is enalapril the same as lisinopril?

They are different molecules in the same ACE inhibitor family, used for the same conditions. Lisinopril is active as it is, while enalapril has to be converted in the body into its active form, enalaprilat. Both are usually taken once or twice a day.

Does enalapril cause a cough?

Yes — a tickly, dry cough is the side effect most associated with ACE inhibitors. It can start days or weeks after the first tablet and is not a sign of harm. It clears within a few weeks of stopping, and does not linger afterwards.

What if I miss a dose of enalapril?

Take the forgotten tablet when you remember, provided the next dose is still several hours away. If the next one is due soon, leave the missed tablet out and carry on as usual; two at once can make your pressure dip and leave you dizzy.

About Enalapril

What enalapril tablets are used for

Enalapril is a blood pressure medicine from the ACE inhibitor group. Taken alone it brings down high blood pressure; taken with other medicines it is also used to treat heart failure, and it sometimes has a place in kidney disease caused by diabetes. High blood pressure rarely announces itself, and the damage it does to the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes builds quietly, so the tablets are usually continued for years rather than weeks. Enalapril keeps these conditions under control rather than curing them, and stopping suddenly can let pressure climb again.

How enalapril works and how to take it

The body makes a hormone, angiotensin II, that narrows blood vessels and makes the kidneys hold on to salt and water. Enalapril blocks the enzyme that produces it. Vessels relax, the heart meets less resistance with each beat, and pressure falls. Dosing is usually once or twice a day, and food makes little difference: a tablet can go with breakfast, with dinner or on its own. Keeping to the same hour or hours each day holds the level in your blood steady.

Side effects

A persistent dry cough is a well-known nuisance of this drug group and can appear only after a few weeks of use; it goes away when the tablets do. Early on, dizziness when standing, tiredness and headaches are common as the body adjusts to lower pressure. Rarer and more serious: swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat that makes swallowing or breathing difficult, which needs urgent treatment; yellowing of the skin or eyes; and fainting from a sharp drop in pressure. Blood tests during treatment keep an eye on potassium and kidney function, both of which enalapril can affect.

Other medicines, alcohol and pregnancy

Anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac can blunt the blood pressure effect when used regularly and add to kidney strain. Potassium supplements, salt substitutes built on potassium, and potassium-sparing water tablets (diuretics) like spironolactone can push potassium to unsafe levels, and lithium can build up. Enalapril is not combined with sacubitril/valsartan, or with aliskiren in people who have diabetes. Alcohol magnifies the pressure drop, so lightheadedness arrives sooner. Enalapril is not taken in pregnancy because it can harm the baby, particularly after the first three months.

Strengths and storage

Tablets come in 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg, which lets the daily amount be nudged up or down in small steps; treatment usually opens at a low dose and is adjusted over the first few weeks. Keep the tablets in the pack they arrived in, somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
