FAQ
What pack sizes does Ezetimibe come in?
Ezetimibe comes as 10mg tablets in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180. The page shows the price per tablet in Hong Kong dollars, and the bigger packs bring the price per tablet down compared with the smaller ones.
How long does Ezetimibe take to reach Hong Kong?
Ezetimibe is often taken over a long period, so tracked courier is a sensible choice: 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, and is untracked. Orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.
What is another name for ezetimibe?
Brand names for ezetimibe include Zetia, Ezedoc and Ezetrol. Ezetimibe tablets are a pure generic ezetimibe product and are not any of those brands.
Is ezetimibe a statin?
No. Statins slow how much cholesterol the liver makes; ezetimibe blocks cholesterol being absorbed from the gut. Because the two work in different places, they are often used together, and ezetimibe is also an option when a statin does not suit.
Can ezetimibe be taken at night?
Yes, bedtime is fine. There is no best hour for ezetimibe, and food makes no difference. Choose a time you will keep to, and take it at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after any bile-acid binder such as cholestyramine.
What does ezetimibe do to cholesterol?
It lowers LDL cholesterol by blocking absorption from food and bile in the small intestine. Taken alone it gives a modest reduction, and with a statin the reduction is larger, which is why it is commonly added when a statin has not been enough.
Does ezetimibe cause muscle pain?
Occasionally. Pain in the joints, back, arms or legs is among the more commonly reported effects, and muscle pain or weakness can be a serious one. It is more of a concern when ezetimibe is taken alongside a statin.
About Ezetimibe
Ezetimibe 10mg tablets
Ezetimibe is a single-strength product here: 10mg tablets, in packs from 30 to 180. It treats high LDL cholesterol and other raised blood fats in adults, and it is also used in inherited conditions such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, homozygous sitosterolaemia (plant fats the body cannot clear) and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia.
It is different from a statin. The cholesterol in the blood has two sources: what the liver makes and what is absorbed from food and bile in the small intestine. Statins act on the liver. Ezetimibe acts at the lining of the small intestine and blocks a transporter protein that pulls cholesterol across, so less reaches the bloodstream and the liver clears more from the blood to make up the shortfall.
How it is taken
One 10mg tablet once a day, with or without food, at about the same time each day. People take it by itself, on top of a statin when the statin alone has not brought LDL down enough, or with fenofibrate. The cholesterol effect lasts only while the tablets are taken, so it is a long-term routine. Store the pack in a cool, dry place.
Side effects and interactions
Ezetimibe is usually well tolerated. The effects reported most are diarrhoea, a sore throat, a runny nose, sneezing, and pain in the joints, back, arms or legs. Rare but serious ones are an allergic reaction (hives, a swollen face or throat, trouble breathing), muscle pain or weakness, and signs of liver trouble: yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pain in the upper right abdomen. Those need urgent treatment.
Say your morning routine already includes a Questran sachet. Take the ezetimibe at least 2 hours before it, or wait 4 hours after, because Questran binds ezetimibe in the gut and keeps it from being absorbed. Ciclosporin is another one: it raises ezetimibe levels. Gemfibrozil and similar fibrates do not go with it. And ezetimibe alongside a statin is out in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Ezetimibe on its own or in a combination tablet
This listing is the single ingredient. Ezetimibe is also paired with rosuvastatin in a combination tablet, and both versions are set out on the ezetimibe ingredient page.
