What you will receive

Famvir is the originator brand name, made by Novartis. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Famvir.

  • The same active ingredient (Famciclovir) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Famvir strengths can I order?

Famvir comes as tablets in 250mg and 500mg strengths. The 250mg packs hold 10 to 120 tablets, and the 500mg packs hold 30 or 60. This is generic famciclovir, not the original Famvir. The price per tablet is shown in Hong Kong dollars.

How is Famvir packed for delivery?

Famvir orders leave in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, while standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days and is untracked.

Is Famvir the same as Famciclovir?

Yes. Famvir and Famciclovir are two names for the same generic famciclovir tablets, so you will find every strength and pack on this page.

Is Famvir the same as famciclovir?

Yes. Famciclovir is the active ingredient and Famvir is the brand name it is sold under. The tablets here are generic and come in 250mg and 500mg strengths, and the same tablets are also sold under the plain name famciclovir, so the only difference is the name on the pack.

Famvir or aciclovir: which is taken less often?

Famvir is the one taken less often. Shingles is three times a day against up to five for aciclovir, and a cold sore can be treated with a single dose. Genital herpes outbreaks take a day. Both go after the same herpes viruses.

Can I take Famvir for cold sores?

Yes. For cold sores on the lips or face it is taken as a single dose, ideally at the first tingle or itch. Once blisters are up it has less to do, which is why some people keep a pack at home.

How long does Famvir take to work?

Expect the sores to settle over several days rather than hours. Starting fast matters most: the tablets stop the virus copying itself, and that copying is busiest at the very beginning.

About Famvir

Famvir tablets: generic famciclovir, 250mg and 500mg

A tingling patch on your lip, or a band of painful rash down one side of your chest, is when people go looking for Famvir. The tablets here are generic famciclovir in 250mg and 500mg, and Famvir is the brand name that most people know it by. Famciclovir treats infections from the herpes virus family: shingles, cold sores and genital herpes. The body converts it into penciclovir, which stops the virus copying itself.

It does not cure the infection or stop you passing the virus on. It can ease the pain, burning and itching, help sores heal and head off new ones, if you start early.

How the tablets are taken

Food makes no difference. The schedule does, and it is short. Shingles runs three times a day for a week, and the clock starts with the rash: the first dose should come within three days of it. Cold sores are quicker, one dose at the first tingle or itch, before a blister forms. A genital herpes outbreak takes twice a day for one day, if you begin within six hours of the first symptom. Keeping genital herpes from coming back is the long course, twice a day for up to a year, in people with a normal immune system.

The number of tablets in each dose depends on the strength you have, so work from the pack. A missed dose is taken as soon as you remember, unless the next one is close.

Side effects, and who should skip it

Headache is the commonest, followed by nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, wind, stomach pain, tiredness, rash and itching. Painful periods are also reported. Pain, burning, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet counts as a serious effect. Famciclovir can make some people dizzy, drowsy or confused, so wait to see how it affects you before driving.

An allergy to famciclovir, penciclovir or aciclovir rules these tablets out. It also contains lactose, which people with galactose intolerance need to know about. Weaker kidneys mean a lower dose, since the kidneys do the clearing, and probenecid (a gout medicine) pushes the level up.

Famvir, famciclovir and aciclovir

Famvir is famciclovir under its brand name, in 250mg and 500mg tablets; the famciclovir ingredient page has more on the medicine. For the same infections, the antivirals category also has aciclovir, an older drug you take more times a day.
