What you will receive
Glucophage is the originator brand name, made by Bristol-Myers Squibb. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Glucophage.
- The same active ingredient (Metformin) at the same strength.
- The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.
FAQ
Which Glucophage strengths and pack sizes can I order?
You can choose 500mg, 850mg or 1000mg, and any of the three comes in packs from 30 up to 360 tablets. The tablets are generic metformin rather than the original Glucophage, and the larger the pack, the lower the price per tablet.
How can I pay for Glucophage delivery to Hong Kong?
You can pay for Glucophage with Visa, Mastercard or American Express on a secure, encrypted payment page, or with Bitcoin or Ethereum. Card details never reach the shop's servers. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched.
Does Glucophage have other names?
Glucophage is a brand name of metformin, which is also sold as Fortamet, Glyciphage, Metabet and Obimet. Here, metformin can be bought online as generic Glucophage, and also as Glycomet and metformin tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
How long does Glucophage take to work?
Blood sugar begins to shift over the first few days. The fuller picture, the one an HbA1c test records, takes a few weeks to show as the amount you take is settled.
Can I take Glucophage on an empty stomach?
You can, but expect more nausea, cramps and loose stools than with food. Most people take it at breakfast and with the evening meal, especially in the first weeks.
What is the difference between Glucophage and Glucophage SR?
Standard tablets are spread across the day with meals. The slow-release versions, SR 500mg and XR 1000mg, are taken once in the evening and release metformin gradually overnight.
About Glucophage
What Glucophage is for, and when to take it
Glucophage is metformin in tablet form, taken for type 2 diabetes. Metformin is a biguanide: it cuts the amount of sugar your liver releases, reduces how much sugar you take in from food, and helps your body get more out of the insulin it makes. It is not a treatment for type 1 diabetes. Glucophage tablets come as 500mg, 850mg and 1000mg.
The tablets go with food, two or three times a day: breakfast and the evening meal for most people, with lunch added once the daily amount climbs. A tablet taken with a meal is much less likely to leave you queasy or cramped, and the same reasoning explains why the amount starts low and is built up slowly.
What people notice, and the rare warning
Loose stools, nausea, stomach ache, wind and a metallic taste are the usual early complaints, and for many people they settle within a few weeks. Lactic acidosis is the rare, serious one — a build-up of acid in the blood that needs urgent treatment. Extreme tiredness, deep rapid breathing, aching muscles with cold hands and feet, or vomiting and stomach pain that will not stop are the signs. A lot of alcohol at once raises the risk of it and can also send blood sugar too low.
Glucophage, Glucophage SR, Glucophage XR and Glycomet
The plain tablets described above are the three-strength version, taken with meals. Glucophage SR is the 500mg slow-release tablet and Glucophage XR the 1000mg one; both are swallowed once a day with the evening meal, which suits people who would rather not carry tablets to work. Glycomet is another 500mg metformin tablet. All of them contain the same medicine, so the choice comes down to strength, tablet size and how often you want to take it. The metformin page has more on the ingredient itself.
