What you will receive
Glyxambi is the originator brand name, made by Boehringer Ingelheim. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Glyxambi.
- The same active ingredient (Linagliptin / Empagliflozin) at the same strength.
- The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.
FAQ
Which Glyxambi pack sizes are available?
30, 60 or 90 tablets. They are generic linagliptin plus empagliflozin rather than the original Glyxambi, and the 90 pack costs least per tablet.
Can I cancel my Glyxambi order before it ships?
Yes, orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched. Support answers 24/7 in English and Cantonese by live chat. Tracked courier then takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking.
Is Glyxambi the same as Jardiance plus Tradjenta?
In terms of ingredients, yes: Jardiance is empagliflozin and Tradjenta is linagliptin, and Glyxambi puts both in one tablet. That means one pill a day rather than two, with the amounts set at 25mg and 5mg.
Does Glyxambi cause weight loss?
A little, in some people. Passing sugar in the urine means calories are lost, and empagliflozin can bring a small drop in weight, while linagliptin does not change it. It is a diabetes treatment, not a weight-loss one.
Why does Glyxambi cause thrush?
Because the urine carries sugar, which yeast feeds on. Genital thrush is common with all SGLT2 inhibitors, and so are urinary infections. It tends to appear in the first months and clears with an antifungal cream or tablet.
Can I drink alcohol on Glyxambi?
Small amounts are fine for most people, but heavy drinking is a problem. It raises the risk of ketoacidosis and dehydration, and it makes blood sugar swing.
About Glyxambi
Two diabetes medicines in one tablet
Each Glyxambi tablet holds 25mg of empagliflozin and 5mg of linagliptin. Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor: it stops the kidneys taking glucose back into the blood, so the sugar leaves in the urine. Linagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that keeps the gut's incretin hormones active for longer, which helps the pancreas release insulin after meals and leaves the liver making less sugar.
The tablet is for adults with type 2 diabetes, taken alongside diet and exercise, usually once one medicine on its own has not been enough. It is not used for type 1 diabetes or ketoacidosis. In effect it is empagliflozin and Tradjenta combined, with a single strength on offer and a choice of 30, 60 or 90 tablets.
Taking it
One tablet each morning. Drink fluids through the day, because the sugar loss draws water with it. If vomiting, diarrhoea or a fever stop you eating and drinking normally, empagliflozin is usually paused until you are better, and before an operation it is stopped about three days earlier.
What to watch for
The empagliflozin part brings most of the effects. More urine and thirst come first, and the sugar in the urine feeds yeast, so genital thrush and urinary infections are common; washing and drying the area helps. Dehydration can make you dizzy, especially in older people and anyone on a water tablet.
Ketoacidosis is the serious one. Empagliflozin can cause it even when blood sugar is not very high. The signs are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness and fast breathing, and they mean stopping the tablet. Heavy drinking raises the risk. A painful, swollen or red area around the genitals is another reason to stop and get urgent care.
Linagliptin's share of the effects is a runny nose, joint pain and, rarely, pancreatitis or blistering skin. Add insulin or a sulfonylurea and low blood sugar becomes more likely. Rifampicin weakens the tablet, and the sugar-lowering effect fades as kidney function falls.
