What you will receive

Micardis is the originator brand name, made by Boehringer Ingelheim. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Micardis.

  • The same active ingredient (Telmisartan) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Micardis strengths and pack sizes can I order?

You can order Micardis 20mg and 40mg tablets in packs of 30 to 360 tablets, and 80mg tablets in packs of 30 to 90 tablets. The pack contains generic telmisartan, not the original Micardis. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

Which delivery option suits a longer Micardis course to Hong Kong?

For a longer generic Micardis course, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, and is untracked. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.

What other names is telmisartan sold under?

Micardis is a brand name of telmisartan, which is also sold as Telday, Telista, Telvas and Tolura. Here, telmisartan can be bought online as generic Micardis. These are generics, not the original brand.

How long does telmisartan take to work?

Pressure starts to drop after the first dose, but the full effect needs a few weeks of taking it every day. Dose changes are therefore judged over weeks, and a cuff reading that has barely moved in the first days is not a sign the tablets are failing.

Does telmisartan cause a cough?

Rarely. The dry, tickly cough people connect with blood-pressure tablets comes from ACE inhibitors such as ramipril, a different group. If a cough appears after a switch to telmisartan, this medicine is an unlikely cause.

Can I drink alcohol with telmisartan?

Alcohol widens blood vessels in the same way the tablets do, so a heavy evening adds to the drop in pressure and can leave you light-headed when you stand up. A drink or two is usually felt much less. The effect is strongest in the first days of treatment.

Should I cut down on salt while taking telmisartan?

Yes, it is worth doing. Most dietary salt comes from prepared food such as cured meats, stock cubes, sauces and takeaways rather than the shaker, and a very salty diet pushes pressure up against what the tablets are doing.

Morning or evening — when is the best time to take telmisartan?

Whichever suits you, because the tablet lasts through the day and night. What counts is choosing one slot and sticking to it. People who feel dizzy when they stand up in the morning sometimes move the tablet to the evening.

About Micardis

What these tablets are for

Telmisartan, the ingredient in Micardis tablets, is an angiotensin II receptor blocker, or ARB. Angiotensin II is a natural chemical that narrows blood vessels. Blocking it leaves the vessels relaxed, so blood has more room and the pressure inside the arteries falls. That is what the tablets treat: high blood pressure, which usually causes no symptoms and shows up on a cuff reading rather than in how you feel. In people at higher risk of heart problems the same medicine is used to lower the chance of a heart attack or stroke. Untreated, high pressure strains the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes.

Taking telmisartan

One tablet a day, at the same time each day — with breakfast, or at bedtime if that is easier to remember. Food makes no difference to how it is absorbed; swallow it with water. The effect builds over the first days and weeks, so a run of missed tablets can show up in your readings. Take a forgotten tablet later the same day if you remember; if the next one is almost due, leave the missed dose out and carry on. Most people stay on this medicine long term. Keep the tablets in their original packaging in a cool, dry place.

Side effects

Dizziness and light-headedness are what people notice first, often on standing up quickly while the body adjusts to lower pressure. Tiredness, back pain, diarrhoea, a sore throat or a stuffy nose are the other complaints that come up. A rare allergic reaction can swell the lips, tongue, face or throat and make breathing hard — that is an emergency. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or passing far less urine than usual, points at the liver or kidneys. Muscle aches with dark urine are rare.

Mixing with other medicines

Potassium supplements and "low sodium" salt substitutes are potassium chloride, and alongside telmisartan they can push blood potassium too high. Other blood-pressure tablets — water tablets, calcium-channel blockers, ACE inhibitors — add to the fall in pressure, and so does a heavy night of alcohol, which makes dizziness more likely. Ibuprofen and similar anti-inflammatory painkillers can blunt the effect on pressure and affect the kidneys. Telmisartan is not taken during pregnancy.

Choosing a strength

The tablets come as 20mg, 40mg and 80mg. For high blood pressure, 40mg once a day is the usual starting point; 20mg suits a gentler start, and 80mg is there for when the reading stays high on 40mg. Adding a second blood-pressure medicine is often more effective than lifting the telmisartan strength. The tablets sold here are generic telmisartan under the Micardis name, in the same three strengths as the original brand.
