FAQ
Which Myambutol strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Myambutol comes as 200mg, 400mg, 600mg and 800mg tablets, in packs of 30 to 360 tablets. It is generic ethambutol hydrochloride, not the original Myambutol. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Myambutol delivered to Hong Kong for a long course?
For a long course of Myambutol, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, while standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days and is untracked. Orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.
How long does a course of Myambutol last?
TB is treated over months rather than weeks. Ethambutol usually belongs to the intensive first part of the regimen and is often stopped before the whole course finishes, while the other TB medicines carry on. How long it stays in the plan depends on the type of infection and how well it responds.
Do antacids affect Myambutol?
Antacids that contain aluminium can lower the amount of ethambutol your body absorbs, so leave a few hours between an antacid and your Myambutol dose. It is the aluminium that causes the problem.
How is the Myambutol dose worked out?
The daily total is based on body weight, and it is recalculated if your weight changes during the course. Four tablet strengths — 200mg, 400mg, 600mg and 800mg — let that total be matched closely.
How should I store Myambutol tablets?
Keep them in their blister strips or bottle, somewhere cool and dry and out of direct sunlight. A course can run for months, so check the expiry date before you start and again before opening a new pack.
What else is ethambutol used for?
Besides TB, it is used in some infections caused by other mycobacteria, such as Mycobacterium avium complex, which can affect the lungs and other organs. These infections are treated with a combination of medicines rather than ethambutol on its own.
About Myambutol
What Myambutol is used for
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Most cases begin in the lungs, and the kidneys, spine, brain and lymph nodes can be affected too. Ethambutol, the active ingredient in Myambutol, is one of the medicines given together to clear active TB, and it is also used in some mycobacterial infections of the skin, lymph nodes and soft tissue. Latent TB, where the bacteria are present but cause no illness, is treated with a different set of drugs.
How ethambutol works
Mycobacteria wrap themselves in a thick, waxy wall that keeps their shape and lets them divide. Ethambutol blocks an enzyme the germ needs to build part of that wall, so the wall is left incomplete and the bacteria cannot multiply. The medicine slows the infection rather than wiping it out on its own; the other drugs in the regimen do the killing. Ethambutol is never taken by itself, because TB bacteria develop resistance to a single drug quickly.
Taking Myambutol each day
Your daily dose is worked out from body weight, and it is usually taken once a day. Swallow the tablets with water, at a time of day that suits you whether or not you have eaten. TB treatment runs for months, so a fixed hour each day is easier to keep to than a dose that drifts. Gaps in treatment let the bacteria grow back, and a missed stretch can set a whole course back.
Side effects to expect
Common problems are digestive and general: nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, stomach upset, headache, dizziness and sore joints. Most settle as treatment goes on, and numbness or tingling in the hands and feet sometimes develops. Vision is what to watch with ethambutol. Blurred sight, dulled reds and greens or a general loss of sharpness are the warning signs. They tend to come on after weeks of treatment rather than on day one and can become permanent if the tablets carry on, which is why eyesight is checked before and during a course.
Choosing a strength and pack size
Four tablet strengths are listed: 200mg, 400mg, 600mg and 800mg, so a daily dose built around body weight can be put together from few tablets. Packs start at 30 tablets and go up to 360. A 30-tablet pack suits trying a strength or covering a short stretch; a bigger pack carries more of a months-long course in one order.
